Woodson named top defensive player

NEW YORK -- Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson has won The Associated Press 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
The versatile Woodson tied for the league lead with nine interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, and was a key to the Packers' turnaround on defense.

His role in Green Bay's performance -- second in the league in overall defense, first in interceptions (30), takeaways (40) and turnover margin (plus-24) -- earned Woodson 28 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

He doubled the number of votes for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis in becoming the first Green Bay winner since Reggie White in 1998 and just the second Packer in the 36-year history of the award.

He did have a forced fumble on Sunday.

Also, I don't think getting beat by LF is considered that bad.

voters love some woodson. he stole another award he didnt earn

Still crying over 1997.

The little bitch Manning was only there because of his name.

If you hicks produced better talent, you still wouldn't be crying over 1997. You would have won a few Heismans by now, but when you are a Volunteer, you can't expect it to happen.

Pathetic vote. All the voters see is 9 INT's and are impressed. Teams obviously didn't fear throwing at him, or he wouldn't have had that many opportunities.

Obviously you don't watch much NFL. Woodson was the main main on the second ranked defense during the regular season. He made more plays than anyone I've ever seen on defense during the regular season. He did not have a good game Sunday, but Fitzgerald got away with two offensive interferences. Woodson did not complain, said you have to keep your feet in the NFL or suffer the consequences.

Revis had a good case for winning the award. Tell me the WR who really did a number on him all season.

you can say that Revis is a better cover corner than woodson at this point and I wouldn't argue with you, but Woodson had a better year. Look at the stats. Revis had 6 int's, 0 sacks, 0 forced fumbles, and 47 tackles. Woodson had 9 ints, 2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 65 tackles. Woodson had over double the turnovers and made a ton of really big plays.

I should probably point out that according to pro football focus Revis had 111 passes thrown his way. Woodson had 76 passes thrown his way. Kind of throws your argument out the window a little. There is no doubt Revis is the best pure cover guy. But isn't the award about more than that. You have to take into account Woodson's other play such as the sacks, the big hits, the forced fumbles, hell he even scored 3 td's.

Woodson was lights out this year and this was well deserved. He may not have had the best game but they were down 4 secondary starters from when the season started only so much one man can do.

And he did rip the ball out of Fitzgerlads arm and recovered by Matthews..thus forced fumble

i dont think revis did that well in voting because qbs hardly threw his way. he shut people down. woodson made highlight plays and was more active on defense.

Again revis had 45 MORE passes thrown his way than Woodson had. saying QB's didn't throw his way is a myth. They threw his way alot. And Woodson still had better stats. Revis is a complete stud. He is a full grown man, but I have no problem with Woodson winning the award cause he had a incredible year.

You wouldn't happen to have stats on the completion % on balls thrown each ones way, would you? Or perhaps YPA? Or touchdowns given up?

Those are the numbers that matter for cornerbacks, not sacks (Revis never blitzes because he's always covering the opposing team's top man) or forced fumbles (probably after allowing his man to make the catch).

Here is a comparison of the burn % of both players according to Stat Inc.

Revis: 40 receptions on 108 targets (37.0 percent) for 439 yards and two touchdowns.

Woodson: 40 receptions on 84 targets (47.6 percent) for 560 yards and six touchdowns.

And the caliber of opposition each faced is not even close.

Your right, we should probably just give the award to Nnamdi Asomugha then. Cause he is arguablly a better cover corner than Revis. Unlike Revis QB's literally don't throw the ball to his side. Qb's only dared to throw toward Asomugha's side 28 times this year, 30 times last year, and 23 times in '07. He has also only given up 2 td's in the last 3 years combined. The award isn't about the best cover guy. It's about the best defensive player, and I'm sorry Woodson made a ton of big plays, and has the stats to back it up. I would've had zero problem if Revis would have won but to think Woodson winning is ridiculous is crazy. He played great all year.
