DVD? Blu Ray?

Obviously no one knows more about cutting edge technology than a bunch of sick gamblers, so......why not, lets ask?

Should I buy a dvd player or should I just get a blu ray instead? Will dvds be extinct in a year or two or will they continue making them?

If blu ray is the way to go, should I buy one for around 120 bucks, or would it make more sense to buy a PS3 which reads blurays?

I await your guidance folks.

i went with PS3...i play a few games and love the fact that it plays blu rays. And yes DVDs will be gone soon. If you're a gamer, it's like icing on the cake.

also wireless internet capabilities, streaming Netflix, photos, music, etc. PS3 is the way to go. Was one of the best blu ray players available for a long time...some newer models are a little better on load time, etc. now

really can't go wrong with a ps3....if you're not into the video games, you can get a blu ray player for about 150 cheaper....if i remember right, the one i got 6 months ago runs about 200 bucks.....it does netflix and all that

as far as picture quality, i've got dvds that look just as good as blu rays, the biggest difference i notice between blu ray discs and dvds is sound quality

:drink:Do you need a ps3 to receive streams from netflix or can you stream only thru ps3? I need one soon myself. What is the best way to watch an event that you are watching on your PC but want to watch on your Big plasma tv?

Tex, I use a "VGA/SVGA male-to-male connector:

One end goes in the VGA-out port of my computer. The other end goes in the VGA-in port of my TV. I then change the Input selection on my TV to "PC". Yours may be listed differently.

Since I have a laptop, I have to use the Fn key along with F10 to switch video output to the external port. Your function key may be different if you are using a laptop.

Aren't the blue ray discs themselves expensive? Blue ray is here for now but the question is, when will it be replaced with the next big thing?

Discs themselves seem to be going away. In due time, everything will come in over your home network.

dvd is going away slowly, blu-ray is the thing to go with man

Yup. I predict Blu-Ray will be gone in five years.

I think both formats are getting outdated by digital distribution... I'd add the money to your PC/internet budget and get a decent monitor

Blu Ray is useless unless you have a screen 46" or larger. To tell the difference.

It will probably be at least 5 - 6 years before DVD becomes obsolete.

Every release is published on DVD 1st, Blu Ray 2nd. It will be that way for years to come.

Blu - Ray isn't competitive enough with it's pricing to be the absolute main stream choice just yet.

I agree gotta go with the PS3
I think this is the best solution also.

PS3 slim.

Upscales DVDs, Plays Blu-Ray, You get a current generation game system, acts as a media server if configured that way. The thing even has an internet browser. And oh ya, comes with Wi-Fi and Blue tooth built in.

It's a great machine.

Go for the PS3. I just got a second one on Christmas to keep one in the TV room and one for my room. I still don't know all that machine can do for me and only get in about 3 hours video game time a week but sooner or later I will get to use its full capabilities.

What I see in the future of home movie and tv content is this:

DVD will stick around just as long if not longer then the VHS. Blu Ray will be second fiddle until they lower their pricing or the studios strip some of the extra content and extended/unrated scenes from DVD and making it blu-ray exclusive content.

Network TV is in trouble though. Cheap reality shows have taken over and first run shows are coming out on cable. With the loss of ratings the network tv can't afford to run shows with mid to low ratings for too long. Cable TV all they care about is subscriptions and not ratings. I think either new tv shows are going to become either subcriber exclusive like Friday Night Lights is with DirecTV or you will see some kind of Internet TV that will air shows and get money from advertising based on website hits.

Okay thanks. I assume most newer plasmas have a VGA in port connection.
