I'll have to check around and see if any Books have a Line on this.

But here is a Good Read, IMO.....

LOS ANGELES (AP)

Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are finally in that long-awaited match race - for Horse of the Year.

The two females who dominated thoroughbred racing were the only horses receiving votes for the honor, however, there were three finalists in each of the other 16 Eclipse Award categories announced Wednesday.
The winners will be honored Jan. 18 in Beverly Hills.

Either Rachel Alexandra or Zenyatta will become the first female to win the year-end honor since Azeri in 2002. They are virtual locks to win divisional championships.

Rachel Alexandra is a finalist for 3-year-old filly after going 8-0 with a Preakness Stakes win, one of three victories over males. Careless Jewel and Flashing are the other nominees.

The 5-year-old Zenyatta is a finalist for older female after a 5-0 campaign capped by a win over boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic. The other nominees are her stablemate Life Is Sweet, who won the BC Ladies' Classic, and Music Note.

Rachel Alexandra is scheduled to compete as a 4-year-old this year, while Zenyatta has been retired for breeding.

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird and Florida Derby winner Quality Road are the 3-year-old male finalists.
Gio Ponti and Kodiak Kowboy are finalists in two divisions. Both are up for an Eclipse as top older male, with Gio Ponti also a finalist for best male turf horse, and Kodiak Kowboy also a finalist for best male sprinter.
Ventura also is a finalist in two categories - female sprinter and female turf horse.

The top three finishers in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile - Vale of York, Lookin at Lucky and Noble's Promise - are finalists for champion 2-year-old colt or gelding.

Zenyatta owners Jerry and Ann Moss and her trainer, John Shirreffs, are finalists in their respective categories. The other trainers up for the Eclipse are Steve Asmussen (Rachel Alexandra) and Bob Baffert (Lookin at Lucky). Godolphin Racing and Juddmonte Farms are the other finalists for owners.

The jockey finalists are Ramon Dominguez, Garrett Gomez and Julien Leparoux. Gomez topped the national purse earnings list for the fourth consecutive year with $18,571,171.

Voting is done by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National Turf Writers Association and the Daily Racing Form.

If Zenyatta wins, the RA camp & its fans should riot. RA clearly deserves HOY as her campaign easily trumps Zenyatta.

Rumor is Zenyatta will win because the owner of RA is hated by many in the industry.

Zenyatta captures NTRA's 'Moment of the Year'

By Matt Hegarty
Voters participating in an online poll administered by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association overwhelmingly selected Zenyatta's win over males in the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park as the "Moment of the Year," according to the association.
The Breeders' Cup win, which extended Zenyatta's undefeated record to 14 victories, was selected by 68 percent of the voters among 14 choices, according to the NTRA. A win by 3-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra over older male horses in the Sept. 5 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Racecourse garnered 10 percent of the vote to finish a distant second, just ahead of Mine That Bird's Kentucky Derby victory, at 9 percent.
Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are the only two finalists for Horse of the Year. Zenyatta's connections will receive an award for the "Moment of the Year" at the Jan. 18 Eclipse Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, when the selection of the Horse of the Year will be announced.

i disagree i think it should be Z...take nothing away from RA she ran against the boys a 3 times and beat them all 3 times but 2 of those were only against 3 year olds (weak 3 year old class) she beat older males once in the woodward....zenyatta only ran against the males once but she took on the BEST horses in the WORLD...seriously i look at it like the superbowl, 1 game for all the money....pats beat STL when STL had the better team...NYG beat the pats when the pats were the better team....it is what it is....zenyatta ran older males in 1 race against the best and the world and STOMPED them....not to mention she won all her other races...eod IMO...

Zenyatta campaign can't be compared to RA campaign.
RA campaign was so much more difficult it's ridiculous.

I went with Zenyatta. Gotta disagree with you guys. Both were incredible but Rachel beat up on one of the weakest 3-year old classes in a long time. Zenyatta beat much tougher competition in the Classic.

this may be old news or a widely talked about topic i assume but i'm not into the horse racing game at all. Is this the first time 2 filly's have been up for horse of the year?

RA had a campaign that I'm unlikely to see duplicated in my lifetime.

The 11 horses that Zenyatta beat in the Classic had a combined 12 artificial surface wins.

Rachel Alexandra is a 3 year old filly while Zenyatta is a 4 year old mare. Neither are 2 year olds.

Zenyatta will be Horse Of The Year and all indications from recent polls is that the vote won't even be close!
