how many times in your gambling career did you get yourself into a pickle, only to look back on it now as a learning experience?

Got myself so jammed up in the late 70s ...........A judge gave me 10 years for my actions .
Learning experience ? ........NO ........It was a life experience that not many know ........It changed the whole course of my ( an some family members ) life .........If you think its a problem, get out now .....

More times than I want to remember, they were all learning experiences, unfortunately I had to learn a few of them again a few times

"Please Just one time and I will never gamble again"

I remember a Monday night football game - Niners at Lions in the mid 70's. I took The Niners plus 7 or 7.5 points for my lungs, chasing to get out as I hadn't learned yet and was losing 17-6 late in the game. The game was played in Tiger Stadium of all places.

I am sitting on my bed watching the end of the game on our 19" bedroom TV with around 10 seconds to play and the Niners 4th and goal from The Lions 11 yard line.

I was actually praying that if I get out of this one I will never gamble again. Well to make a long story short Wilbur Jackson a rookie running back out of Alabama took a little screen pass from some obscure Niners QB on the last play of the game, busted a couple of tackles to score a meaningless TD as far as the winner of the game went but it made the final score 17-13 Lions giving SF the cover.

Instead of being stuck like 2 grand for the week due on Wednesday (which was a lot of dough to me back then because I didn't have it) I break even for the week,

Needless to say, I didn't keep my promise, but I remembered the lesson and never, that I can recall, got in a situation like that again.

Fishhead - it's strange probably because I have never noticed anything like it before but your whole quote of mine is in lower case. Some kind of software glitch I guess.

Douglas - That is another old gamblers saying. "I hope I break even I really need the money"..

Here was my game as I can remember it to the day as I needed the Jags real bad this night and think the line was Jags (-4) and was down quite a bit as I can recall. To make a long story short the Steelers were lining up for the game winning FG and was thinking where in the hell was I going to get a large sum of money to pay the man. Then all of a sudden the Jags blocked the FG and the guy returning it ran right by Bill Cowher and Cowher almost made an attempt to tackle the guy but the Jags scored the TD and I was a very happy man that night and didn't even sleep a wink that night and that got me back to even for the week.

Once - that's all it took.

In college down 3 dimes to local chased it to 5dimes then hit a 4 teamer to get it to 2 & paid him with borrowed money and didn't make a bet for 2 years.

Now I pay attention and NEVER chase.

Can honestly say I've never got myself in a pickle gambling. Unless you count playing one too many football cards in high school and having to go without lunch. I guess I've been blessed with a good amount of discipline. And, I've been at it since a good % of you were still swimming in your father's testicles.

As long as we're into gambling cliches............A gambling denerate friend once asked me to borrow $200. I told him I'd give him $100 but only if he PROMISED not to gamble with it. The way I see it , now we're both ahead $100 !

Gravy, check this out man: Guy risks $2 000 to win $20 on that kick, essentially betting it won't be blocked and returned for a tuchdown

'Earlier this year in a Monday-night game," Cohen says, recalling one memorable 10-point swing, "Pittsburgh was about to kick a 40-yard field goal with six seconds left. If they hit it, Pittsburgh wins 24-23. [Even if they missed, the Steelers were getting three points and would have covered.] Because of that, the price on Pittsburgh before that play was $99. So if you bought Pittsburgh and they hit, you'd win $100, or a $1 profit. We had a guy buy 20 contracts on Pittsburgh then, figuring it was an easy $20. Then Jacksonville blocks the kick and runs it back for a touchdown. He lost $1,980 on that block."

I hate to think of how many times. Fortunately, since I've gone offshore, there are no more pickles since it's all cash.
