So here it comes, either the Indianapolis Colts' ultimate dream or their worst nightmare. Here come the New York Jets, America's Cinderella and Indy's Frankenstein. The Jets are the Colts' creation, a team that only reached the playoffs because Colts president Bill Polian and coach Jim Caldwell weren't interested in perfection. Now, this imposing monster of a team, bolstered by a frightful defense and the enduring power of belief, is coming to Lucas Oil Stadium for Sunday's AFC Championship Game.

If you think this is some kind of giant break for the Colts, who, like in 2006, have been spared another meeting with their arch-nemesis Chargers, think again:

It's one thing for the Jets to smack down the Cincinnati Bengals, who had a sore-armed quarterback and no receivers.

It's another to go into San Diego and take the hottest team and one of the hottest quarterbacks, Philip Rivers, to the woodshed. The Chargers ordinarily score 20 points per game falling out of bed. The Jets, who weren't supposed to be able to blitz a quarterback like Rivers and his core of receivers, made them look lost and hapless.

Are the Jets one-dimensional? Sure, they are. But that one dimension wins playoff games. Recall the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, who went weeks without scoring an offensive touchdown. Didn't matter. They won with defense, won the Super Bowl, and did it with a defensive line coach named, um, Rex Ryan.

A week ago, I looked at the Colts' three possible division opponents -- Cincinnati, Baltimore and the Jets -- and suggested the Jets would be a soft touch, a 31-3 loser, a one-dimensional team with no hope of winning here.

Then I watched what they did Sunday in San Diego. I watched what they did without the benefit of their usually productive running game. I watched Mark Sanchez continue to grow before America's eyes. I watched Ryan make a smart, gutsy fourth-down decision like a guy on a cosmic roll at a Vegas craps table.

Gulp.

On the surface, it might look like the Colts caught a huge break Sunday, getting the No. 5 seed in here one week after dispatching the No. 6. But the Jets aren't playing like a No. 5 seed anymore. And beyond that, there's a whiff of magic about them now, a sense they are destiny's team, and that's a very dangerous combination.

It wasn't so long ago that Ryan incorrectly told the media his team was out of playoff contention. Then it happened: The Colts laid down the last quarter-and-a-half, gift-wrapping a Jets victory. And the Bengals, sitting Cedric Benson and playing with very little on the line, mailed it in that final game of the regular season.

Now look.

The backdoor Jets are on the doorstep of the Super Bowl.
America's Cinderella.

And the Colts' version of the Frankenstein monster.

Need some comparisons?

Forty-one years ago, another Colts team faced the Jets as a prohibitive double-digit favorite. That was Super Bowl III, the Joe Namath "guarantee,'' the game that essentially forced the NFL-AFL merger. Forty-one years ago, nobody in Baltimore and almost nobody in America thought the upstart Jets had a chance. Well, they have a chance Sunday. They absolutely have a chance.

After the Colts' divisional victory Saturday, players were naturally asked who they preferred to play, and they naturally answered that they didn't care. Pump them full of sodium pentathol, and I'd bet most of them hoped for a return visit from the Jets. First, the Chargers have driven them crazy in recent years. But they still feel like they owe the Jets a little something, that they were forced to give away that game and their perfect season by management.

When the starters were still out there, the Jets did almost nothing. The Colts scored 15 points, just missing on long passes to Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. The Jets kicked a field goal, and got their other seven points on a Brad Smith kickoff return.

To Colts fans, I would say this before you book your tickets to Miami: Be careful what you wish for.

Now, then, the real fun starts, and Ryan and his Jets are going to make it fun.

Ryan is the anti-Jim Caldwell, similar only in the sense that both men are rookie head coaches. He is full of bluster and bold pronouncements, a Namath-esque figure without the full-length mink and the panty hose commercials. Caldwell? Shoot, you have to sit in his lap simply to hear him during one of his media briefings. The next time he says something that's headline-worthy will be his first. He's so guarded, when somebody asked him what his wife bought him for his birthday Saturday, he chose not to share that information. (What was it? Plutonium?)

The Jets are the swaggering teens, filled with testosterone and bravado. They are the embodiment of New York and New Jersey. They roar, they tweet, they posture and, lately, they back it up.

The Colts are the button-down, wing-tip-wearing professionals, a conservative, no-frills Midwestern team in every conceivable way.
The Colts created this monster, and along the way, they've gotten some help from two horrendous field goal kickers and a San Diego coach, Norv Turner, who butchered the last two minutes of Sunday's game.

Charity began at home, right here in Indianapolis.

It ends here, too.

i was thinking of that same thing yesterday when the Jets pulled off the upset...

I thought here we go, a chance to prove that they only ended our perfect season, because we ended it ourselves....but moreso we basically put the Jets in the playoffs that day (or better to say we could have knocked them out and we didnt) and now we get what we asked for, the Jets coming back....

As a colts fan I would have rather had a chance to Beat SD and put that BS to rest. Ye ye Cinderella team or what not , Peyton Manning isnt Rivers , he'll put up points one way or another. I know this Jets Secondary and overall defence is great , but With Garcon , Collie , Clark and Wayne and the X and O's patience Peyton has, Colts win and head to Miami. Thanks for the article Wil ! But Im confident Colts pull through !

I remember being a very young boy when Joe Namath made his "guarantee.
I thought he was cool and showed what leadership is all about, convincing your teammates that it can be done against all odds. Johnny U, and Earl Morrall and the Colts were the establishment. Now that this years Jets have granted the Colts the ultimate thank you, hopefully they will seal it with a kiss this Sunday and send the Colts packing.
Unfortunately, Sanchez, the rookie QB is no Joe Willie yet, and the NFC winner will prevail in the Super Bowl, whether or not it's the Jets or the Colts.(<)<

The Colts secondary is mad slept on. People think because Bob Sanders is gone with the wind that there are a bunch of nobodies back there, but Hayden, Bethea, Bullitt, Lacey, Powers, & occasionally Jennings can flat out play! We all know Freeney & Mathis will have no trouble applying pressure on Dirty Sanchez. I do fear & respect the Jets DEF, but the disparity between the Jets O and the Colts D is much greater than the difference between the Jets D and the Colts O. People love to harp on how the Colts can't run the ball, but Addai actually looked sick this year. The Colts don't need their RBs to get tons of yards at this stage in Peyton's career; a couple gashes in the red zone and a short yardage conversion here or there is about all Peyton needs from the running game. If the Jets can somehow have a +2 or +3 turnover differential against the Colts then by all means it can be a ballgame, but under normal non-fluke circumstances I think the Colts win this game going away.

Rex Ryan would be 'shocked' if New York Jets lose to Indianapolis Colts in AFC Championship Game

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan says he would be 'shocked' if the New York Jets lose to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game.

Rex Ryan fired the first shot of Jets-Colts championship week by not even attempting to disguise his expectations going into the AFC title game, insisting he would be "shocked" if the Jets don't win and get to the Super Bowl.
He may have looked a little tired after the Jets got back from San Diego at 4 a.m. following their 17-14 victory over the Chargers, but Ryan's bravado was in midseason form as he stood in a hallway talking with the Daily News yesterday about his confidence level going into Sunday's game.
"I'm confident. There is no question about it," he said. "We're going into the game expecting to win. I'd be shocked if we don't. Absolutely would be."
Ryan's brash talk has made him a cult hero to Jets fans, who have been this close to the Super Bowl only twice before in the 41 years since the Jets shocked the Colts in Super Bowl III. Now they are trying to shock the Colts again in the conference championship game after losing to the Dolphins in the '82 season game in Miami and the Broncos in the '98 game in Denver.
But "shocked" if the Jets can't beat Peyton Manning and the Colts in Indianapolis in a playoff game? Not many people would be shocked by not winning under those circumstances.
"Well, that's okay," Ryan said. "We're taking our football team in. It's not just about one guy. It's about the entire football team. We'll see. I feel great about our football team."
Remember, the Colts were 14-0 before throwing in the towel on their undefeated season nearly three quarters of the way through Game No.15 against the Jets. The plan was to put the emphasis on giving the Colts the best chance to win the Super Bowl, not going undefeated, although those two are certainly not mutually exclusive.
The Colts led the Jets 15-10 on Dec. 27 in Indy when coach Jim Caldwell pulled Manning and many of the starters with 5:36 left in the third quarter. Manning was replaced by rookie Curtis Painter - he had yet to take his first professional snap - and he fumbled on the first play of his second series, with the Jets recovering for a touchdown. They went on to win, 29-15.
If the Colts had allowed Manning to keep playing, which he clearly wanted to do, and they won the game, they would have eliminated the Jets from the playoffs. Now they get them with the Super Bowl on the line.
"With us, it wasn't a given they were going to beat us. That's how I look at it," Ryan said. "You got to prove it through the course of 60 minutes. It's true they were ahead of us 15-10. Again, there was no guarantee they were going to beat us."
Instead, the Jets beat the equally uninspired Bengals in the final game of the regular season to earn a playoff spot. Three days later, Ryan proclaimed that the Jets should be the postseason favorites. "I mean in the whole tournament," he said.
Ryan is two victories from producing his promised visit to the White House. He's trying to do it in the first year of his administration and the second year of President Obama's.
Shocking.

If you were a coach with the best shutdown corner in the past 30 years and had an offensive line as good as the Jets making holes for a well rested horse of a running back like Greene, as a head coach, you would feel shocked also whenever your team lost a game.

But on the other hand the Colts looked pretty good against a Baltimore team that made the New England team look pretty bad the week before. I would love to see the JETS but I don't think this will be an easy game for both teams look for a hard fought battle.

I like the Colts in this spot, not a shock, as they are 7+ pt favorites...................

The Jets have their hands full this week.

Colts win by 6-9 pts.

Reality finally set in....I like the Colts and the Vikings....Colts defense is nothing to sneeze at...

FWIW - this article does not necessarily reflect my views on the game, especially for betting purposes. The article came from an Indiana website and is biased.

</header>[h=2]The Twitter account for Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was briefly trending on Thursday when fans suddenly found a porn photo tweeted out on the feed. The explicit photo was soon deleted and Irsay told fans that his Twitter was “hacked.”[/h]Early on Thursday, a full nude photo of a porn star popped up on Irsay’s Twitter feed. According to Deadspin, the photo was of adult film actress Anette Dawn:

The photo that appeared on Irsay’s Twitter is a cropped image from a photo shoot featuring the porn star sitting nude in what might seems to be a limousine.
The tweet was deleted about an hour after it was released, the Daily Mail said.
After the deletion, a blank tweet addressed to multiple local Indianapolis reporters, news stations and the Indiana Pacers was sent out.
Following the deletion, Irsay also issued followers a warning. “I’ve been hacked! Be careful out there,” the tweet read.
The Colts owner, who bought the team in 1997, has not released any further statement on the pornographic photo.
Since Irsay has owned the team, the Colts have reached the Super Bowl twice and have reached the playoffs every year between 2002 and 2010, missing only one year since 1999
