the regular season being diminished has never been a main argument of mine, but by the proposal you make, the regular season would be diminished by:
1) why should teams like Ohio St. step out of conference to play USC, knowing that there's a strong possibility they will lose at least one conference game? you will wind up with BCS teams making it a point to schdule cupcakes for all their nonconference games. that would diminish the regular season. watching Ohio St. take on Tennessee Martin for 4 games interests me about as much as the Toilet Bowl.
2) you propose nothing that's different than the system already in place, which most would agree is flawed. how does that add justice to the teams who would no doubt be overlooked? ball st. could go undefeated and still be left out under your scenario.
i'm not against CFB playoffs, but it should be done right. keep in mind that it's still college athletics -- there's no reason the season should stretch into the NFL playoffs. and do we still want to depend on the voters to select at large teams, or would you rather have a system that eliminates biases and special interests determining who gets in?
Not sure if any of these statements have anything to do with the regular season, but I will answer them anyway.
How is my proposal not any different then what is already in place ! Your joking right ? I want the 4 BCS games to mean something instead of them being a exhibition game like they are now where Boise or TCU or Utah or Auburn still has chance to prove they are the best. They don't now !. Not sure if anyone out there would be arguing for Ball St. " including themselves "to play in the championship, especially if they haven't played anyone of substance.
I think the BCS does a OK job in ranking teams, just as USA and AP does. But to assume they're top two choices are the best teams is flawed, because you just don't know. Thats why they should count the 4 BCS games as quarterfinal games. College Football is there own worst enemy as far as worrying how long 8 teams would get done playing. Why not schedule the 4 BCS games starting the 2nd week of December ? Who really cares anymore about waiting for January 1st ! Tradition has long been gone, with spreading the Orange Bowl game, etc. days out and renaming these games every year. The reason the NFL playoffs don't stretch for months is because they start the next week, not wait to play for several weeks as College Football does.
Why would it change on who Ohio St plays if the BCS games count towards a playoff. Just win the Conference and your in. USC doesn't count towards your conference record. Matter of fact, playing USC could help you get a at large bid in case you didn't win the conference. I don't see how playing Tenn. Martin 4 times would get you ready for a tough Conference schedule.
These are silly arguments BTW. These are not answers to my question.
