San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Chargers locked up head coach Norv Turner through the 2013 season by giving him a three-contract extension on Monday.

The extension comes one day after the Chargers were stunned by the New York Jets, 17-14, in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs.
Turner has had plenty of success since becoming the head coach of San Diego in 2007. The 57-year-old Turner has led the Chargers to three straight AFC West titles.

In his first year at the helm, the Chargers finished the regular season with an 11-5 mark but were defeated by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game. That was proceeded by an 8-8 '08 season that ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round.

Turner coached the Chargers to an impressive 13-3 record this season, which gave them the second seed in the AFC. But San Diego's road to the Super Bowl was stopped by the Jets.

"I'm extremely proud of the job Norv has done with this team," Chargers President Dean Spanos said. "In three seasons he's led the team to three division titles. I'm confident that if we strengthen our roster and continue to provide Norv the assets he needs, this team will have continued success."

Turner has the top overall winning percentage in team history at .648 (35-19) as well as the top regular-season percentage (32-16, .667). In December, the Chargers are 13-0 under Turner. His three playoff wins are tied for most in team history. Also, the team's 13 wins in 2009 are the second most in club history.

You just have to wonder what kind of coach the Chargers need. They had Marty and he took them to the playoffs, but could never get any further. Now they have Norv who gets them a lot of wins during the year but again don't go past the first round of the playoffs.

i think what they really need is a Bill Parcells who would take them to the promised land. Having AJ Smith as their GM might be good at times, but he wants to be up on top of the hill when dealing with other GM's. He just demands too much for trades and doesn't get them done which would help the Chargers. They have to clean house and start fresh.

Perfect time to go get Bill Cowher. Why wouldn't he want to live in the perfect city in America and coach a few seasons? Bill will be back.
