He won his only MVP trophy as a Chicago Cub, but it looks like Andre Dawson will collect his Hall of Fame hardware as a member of the Montreal Expos.

Dawson sent a text message to the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday night saying: "Hall will issue a press release [Wednesday] announcing that I will go in as an Expo."

Dawson spent the first 11 seasons of his career in Montreal, winning Rookie of the Year in 1977. He hit 225 of his 438 career homers with the Expos. He also showcased more of a speed game in Montreal, registering 253 of his 314 career steals.

But it was in Chicago that Dawson became a household name. He handed the Cubs a blank contract in 1987 as a free agent and signed for $500,000 with $250,000 in incentives. He proceeded to bat .287 and led the league in homers (49) and RBIs (137), while winning MVP, a Gold Glove and going to the All-Star Game.

The "Hawk" was an All-Star in five of his six seasons in Chicago before moving on to the Red Sox. He finished his 21-year career with the Expos.

Dawson may wear Cubs hat for speech

<!-- template inline -->Andre Dawson said he was disappointed the Hall of Fame decided his bust in Cooperstown, N.Y., will feature a Montreal Expos hat, but Dawson plans to acknowledge Chicago Cubs fans during his induction speech in July.

Dawson, who spent the first 10 full seasons of his career in Montreal, wanted his bust to feature a Cubs hat. He played six seasons with the Cubs, beginning with his MVP year in 1987.

"I know the difference in the 10 to 6 years probably was something of a consideration on their part," Dawson said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "But I tried to explain, perhaps, the impact of what really catapulted me to Hall of Fame status, and pretty much what my preference was.

"But I think their decision had been made. It was a little gut wrenching for me to hear that, but it's their decision, and I respect that, and from there I move on."

Dawson was hoping his preference would carry a little more weight, but the fact the Expos no longer exist might have made an impact on the Hall. The organization left Montreal after the 2004 season and moved to Washington, D.C., becoming the Nationals.

"The Hall clearly stated their major concern is the history of the game, and that's what really played into their decision," Dawson said. "I'm disappointed. I can probably say that, because Chicago was my preference.

"I received a letter prior to the voting, and it was my understanding they would make the determination [after] sitting down and discussing it ... And I just thought it would carry a little more weight than it did."

Dawson was asked if he might put on a Cubs hat during his induction speech.

Yes. Dawson was in his prime when he played in Montreal and outside of 87 put up his best seasons there. He kind of flew under the radar playing so many years, which is why so many people don't think he's a HOF (plus the fact that he didn't take a bunch of walks).

He and his .323 OBP don't belong in the Hall in the first place.

1442 games played with the Expos, .802 OPS as a centerfielder
867 and .834 with the Cubs as a rightfielder

Are there really that many dumb people in Chicago to even bother questioning this?

It's Dawson himself that's questioning. I could care less about him or his hat, but it seems to me that the player himself ought to be able to choose, but then again the Hall belongs to the Hall and I guess they can do whatever they damn well please.

If the player were allowed to choose, what would stop Derek Jeter from choosing a hat with a Visa logo?

Exactly. The player used to be able to choose their hat until Winfield got caught whoring a $1 million 'personal services contract' out of San Diego for going in as a Padre. I'm sure this probably would have continued with other guys.

Andre Dawson set to throw out first pitch for Game 5 of NLCS

Written By Dan Cahill Posted: 10/17/2015, 08:51am

Everyone is wondering if the Cubs make it to the World Series, who will get the call to the mound for the ceremonial first pitches.
That’s still up in the air.

But we do know that former Cubs star Andre Dawson will make the toss at Wrigley Field for Game 5 (if necessary) of the NLCS vs. the Mets.
Dawson broke the news on The Score’s “Inside The Clubhouse:”

In 1987 Dawson won the NL MVP, belting 49 home runs and driving in 137 runs for the last-place Cubs.
