New York State Police have charged a trucker with manslaughter in the crash that killed a young mother from Snyder on the state thruway in Pembroke last month.
Troopers say the driver was watching a porn movie when tragedy hit. State Police knew something wasn't right when a trucker rammed his rig into a disabled car on the thruway back in December. 33-year-old Julie Stratton, a wife and mother of two from Snyder, was killed. Her car became disabled after hitting a deer. Now State Police say the trucker driver was distracted. The reason: he was watching porn on his laptop computer.
Capt. Michael Nigrelli of the NYS Police said, "It was determined that he was streaming pornographic movies while driving the tractor trailer."
Troopers were stumped at first because other drivers were able to avoid the disabled vehicle.
"It certainly explains why he didn't see the hazard on the roadway and struck Mrs. Stratton's vehicle," said Capt. Nigrelli.
Truck driver Ed Affi-Nito said, "Amenities for truckers have come a long way with all the new technology, but there a proper time to use it, and they're times when it's just not safe."
Affinito has been driving a big rig for 32 years. He showed News 4 all the hi-tech equipment loaded in his cab. But he says smart drivers won't use it while driving and it's against company policy.
"You're not allowed to have nothing on the dash. If you notice my dash is clean, obstacle free, everything for your vision, so nothing distracts you," said Affinito.
Other drivers agree.
Truck driver Dave Serafin said, "What he was doing was wrong. I feel bad for the lady her family and now this man has to live with that."
The truck driver, 45-year-old Thomas Wallace, is now charged with manslaughter.
