My sister is going to run in The Pittsburgh Marathon in a few months. She and a group have been training for over one and half years now and she is finally going to do it. She told me she can go about twenty miles, but at times she will cramp at this point. If she can control those muscle cramps in her sides and legs, I think she might make it. She is pretty head strong so I can see her finishing in her first ever marathon. I ran 12 miles one time when I was in service and I thought I would be in traction for the rest of my life, but that 26 mile deal just makes me go "God did not intend for human being to run 26 miles." I think I might start doing some light running since I have been cigarette free for two years. Very very light running I should say, maybe to the mailbox and back.

She's been training for 1.5 years? Wow! Well, if she's following a training plan she should be able to finish. I just don't understand people wanting to put themselves through that so they can say the "finished" a marathon.

I've run 10 marathons, including Boston. I run around 3 hours. It amazes me seeing some of these people struggle and running for 5, 6 or even 7+ hours. My strategy is to get to the finish line as quickly as possible...that way the pain of running is over! I'm running the New Jersey Marathon the same day as the Pittsburg Marathon (there are like 10 or so Marathons on May 2nd, a popular day)....

Oh, BTW, a marathon is 26.2 miles! Don't forget about that .2!!!

Can you pass along any tips or advise she might not have considered? Thanks in advance.

john, I would just suggest she does not go out "too fast". That's a classic mistake. The first 20 miles are "easy"....the last 6.2 is what makes or breaks a marathoner.

Has she followed a training plan? I believe the Daniels plan includes walk breaks. I don't take walk breaks...but I've heard it's a pretty good plan for those who simply "just want to finish"....
