I mean you aren't supposed to love your job, that's why you get paid to do it.

Some jobs can even be cool and fun, like tending bar, meet broads and stuff, can be fun.

Maybe photographer go to weddings and stuff, party atmosphere, maybe work for Playboy or something ?

Even just a driving job, deliver this ( trailer, boat, whatever) to some place a couple of hundred miles away.

Now prison guard....

lets see

work with a bunch of murderers,rapists,thieves,etc....that want to sharpen their toothbrush into a shank and kill you everyday, or throw their feces and urine at you, or anything else they can think of.

sounds like a lovely career choice ! :think2:

I could see being a cop, you'd only deal with the bad guys occasionally.

I'm guessing a prison guard makes under 60k on average also.

What would attract one to this job ?

Naaa most of them like it Doug, and the reasons vary for each different person.

Most of the guys who do it are jerks to begin with.
I've see & hear the way some of them talk & treat some of their guys on road crews, etc. daily.
All I can say is there are several who had better hope there isn't a prison break or riot because they'll be the first ones they remember.

Then you have a lot of the women who like it because the majority are just freaks like that who like to see & talk to the inmates, as well as a lot of lesbian girls who enjoy it...

I knew a guy who was/is a prison guard (haven't encountered him over 12 years). He's probably the exception, but I don't think he knew where to draw the line between dealing with prisoners and his interacting with those that aren't criminals. IMO, this guy was pretty deranged and somewhat dangerous.

There are a lot of reality type TV shows about prison life. I believe it has to be nasty to be an inmate, or a prison employee...I think guard.

Are they guys that failed to make it as real cops ?

I find that to be a sick career goal, maybe something you settle for because you need a job ( that would be OK), but not to aspire to it.....

....my daughter's a surgeon, professor, something....but I'm really proud of my son that is a prison guard at Chino ?

have a buddy who is a guard. college grad and former army sharp shooter. nice guy and funny as shit as well. just think the job takes a cerain mentality. bunch of crybabies asking for stupid shit all the time would be annoying, but as for the "muderers, rapist, etc" those are in a max security and cell doors are locked most of the day. as long as the door to the tower stays locked, the guards are rarely at risk. on the weekends, they turn on the football games for the inmates and watch the games all day themselves. imagine being snowed in with a couple crying kids but making a couple hundred a day for it. not that bad of a gig.

bartending? who wants to bartend when they are 60? who will hire a 60 y/o bartender? when i tended bar was some of the most fun i ever had, but thinking about the future is why i went to college. guards also get a nice retirement/pension and free medical. not so bad when you really think about it

The guy I knew who was guard was the direct opposite. He coached our Little League Football Team and even attended my grandmothers funeral. He might be a deacon in his church by now for all I know. He did tell us some pretty crazy stories about the men he was in charge of though. He has had problems with his weight in the past and I am sure if it were not for certain regulations the Officers must follow, he would be as big as a house.

Prison guard or Corrections Officer?

CO many places work four days a week and earn a pension at 20 years. Start right out of school and if you earn regular promotions by your 40s the government is paying you $2 to $4k a month to sit home

When I was in the Army worked with a few of them and as far as soldiers go, they all had a good head on the shoulders

I'd kind of like to have a chance for a good day at work, it can actually happen.

Going to prison to work has to be bad, the bad guys are already all there.

Even a cop can have a good day, cruise around, maybe you're just present at a carnival or something, or some roadside construction, etc., not exactly in a prison. I don't see how you can have a good day working at a prison ?

I think you'd try for cop before prison guard ?

Postal worker sure beats prison guard, but you work with the same type of people, make the same type of money, but the postal fuckers are all fake ( did it for 5+ years), the prison guys are for real. A prison guard isn't a babysitter, bad analogy.

I think a prison guard takes the job out of desperation.

Would you rather work at a post office, or a prison ?

I'll take the PO, been there done that !

There was another guy I had much less interaction with that was a prison guard. I'd met him a handful of times and played golf with him once (in a golf threesome.) He was very introspective and didn't say much. My impression was that he was decent and mostly harmless (at least when not on the job).

The other guy I mentioned has an intimidating nature that doesn't translate well when he's not on the job. I'm sure he was just a big bully when he was in grade school.

I can't define the difference between CO and guard.

My point is sure would seem to be a shitty career choice as guard !

If little Johnny says he wants to be a policeman, fireman, marine, astonaut, baseball player, etc.

ok fine !

If my son /nephew at 10 yo, said I want to be a prison guard...I wouldn't say ,Cool !

I'd encourage him to move up to repo man/ bounty hunter/ pro wrestler/ then maybe governor or Minnesota ?, maybe POTUS from there ? :cripwalk:

I say you are a sick fuck to work as a prison guard, or need a job !

Most likely tried to be a cop first, and failed for some reason, physical, physchogical, etc.

I don't see how you could ever have a good ( fun) day at work, unless not getting stabbed by a shiv, or not getting feces hurled at you equals a good day at work ?

Smoking some pot with my boss, and going to drink some beers and shoot pool at the bar with my boss, is a good day at work for me, while we wait for it to snow, and it's time to plow/shovel.etc. :dancefool

So because you wouldn't have the discipline for it, everyone in the field must be a failure elsewhere?

It's a pretty rough job, from what I can see. I don't like my kid ( if I had one), taking this job....

It's a loser job like postal worker, but actually worse than USPS.

knew a bunch of hacks, one of my friends was the guy that initiated transfers. problem cases from other prisons. he was suspended for allegedly beating up one guy. they showed before and after pictures in the newspaper. he played golf all summer, with pay. until he was acquitted, and went back to tuning up inmates.

When I was a loan officer for a mortgage company I dealt with 3-4 different prison guards to help them out with their loans and they were all no personality jackoffs..
