Gary Austin was known as :"King of the Totals"..' at least by rumor; then he had a sportsbook on strip in Vegas; about across the street from Caesar's Palace; close to Churchill Downs Race and Sportsbook...

Those were those days when the large casinos did not have books; and I remember that book taking some real action; Vic Salerno would come in and bet wads of cash; and rumour was he made a fortune...>>along with the Leroy's Braintrust...

There was this sixty-yo kinda guy; always dressed in nice business suits; not mob dress; who always showed up with a briefcase and a wall Street Journal...would go upstairs to the business office.

You could get some renagade lines there; at least in early 1980'S...

I always wondered what happened to that place; and Gary Austin...

:think2:

Gary Austin is a crook. He owned and ran Gary Austin's Race and Sportsbook at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Sands Ave in a prime location on the strip. He was also a very heavy gambler himself and wasn't very good at it. He made a huge bet on the Cardinals to beat the Royals in the 1985 World Series. When he lost a ton of money on that series bet, he faked a robbery of his own joint and left town.

No one got paid that I know of. Any current tickets or future book tickets got stiffed but what was worst of all is that Austin took all the money that was in the phone accounts. He was taking some of the biggest wagers in town so what he stole from the phone accounts was a very large dollar amount.

The Nevada Gaming Commission which is as incompetent as the NCAA held a short dog and pony show hearing but nothing ever came from it. Metro (our corrupt police force) dug around a little bit but they were told by the Gaming Commission to do the digging but make sure you don't dig too deep. What it came down to was Gary Austin is a thief and the Nevada Gaming Commission wanted the whole thing to go away so it wouldn't come out that they weren't properly regulating one of their licensees. Which they weren't.

dick is pretty much spot on. if austin had any
integrity he would of attempted to make good
on his debts rather than staying in cognito.

So here is a scenario. You got beat from Austin back in the 80's. You come across a tradewinds account and lose about what you got stiffed. Do you call them and tell them to have Gary come and collect it.

Cannot believe we have not heard stories like this. Many TW agents floating around vegas.

I know one person that got their money. Touchy situation, because other parties are usually involved. I remember when he showed up in Vegas in the late 70s. He won the first Castaways NFL Handicapping Championship and the started the Austin Edge(tout service). Gary has lived a charmed life. So far.
