The state of PA is about to add table games this summer and I applied for a dealer job (no experience). They are going to have all the training take place in house and I am going to a job fair I was invited to. For anyone that has ever dealt blackjack, roulette, poker, etc. what is good and what is bad about being a dealer?

Try to deal poker - they don't pool their tips.

From my dealer friends - hate bar smoke, drunks, pricks who treat the dealer like crap who are losing big.

IM me, been dealing 19 years -- TRY to get in a dice class for starters, it's the funnest game to deal by far, if you are good you can work anywhere. Poker is best for me here in FLA but that is because of the set-up we work hard 3 hours at a time on the weekends, and the players are very nice to us. In table games (dice/bj) you will never work more than an hour.

It's a great opportunity especially if they are offering free training, also it is great to be on the ground floor for anything as far as shifts and all the beni's... Also there will be expansion next door in OHIO so GO GET IN DICE if you can... If not take anything you can BJ- etc...

At the very minimum it's a skill that you can go just about anywhere in the country nowadays and have something to fall back on.

Im a table games dealer, (blackjack, roulette, etc) and absolutely HATE IT.. I am desperately trying to find something else to do with my life..

Im 32 yrs old and have been dealing for 11 years now.. To the couple guys who said its easy labor and a piece of cake, I say BS! From this job, I have neck/disc problems, foot problems (plantar fasciatis), carpal tunnel, elbow nerve problems, and wicked migraines.. The migraines started before this job, but Im sure the smoke and other allergens dont help..

I've been going to physical therapy for almost a year which only temporarily relieves the pain..
Sure, not everyone will develop these issues, but stay in this business long enough, you will have problems..

I was an all state athlete in high school and college, and can barely stand for any period of time without immense pain, and can hardly lean over the dinner table to eat a bowl of cereal.. Nearly all the old fart dealers have canes and scooters and hunchbacks.. Its brutal..

Mentally, I think Im going insane.. I used to like people, and boy has that changed.. I dread dealing with all these obnoxious idiots, people that demand you constantly smile and act like a freakin clown.. All these phrases and cliches that people yell (winner winner chicken dinner!) are like nails on a chalk board.. I just wanna rip my eardrums out.. Constant complaining and pissing and moaning gets quite annoying.. Drunks and whores on a nightly basis.. Been threatened with physical harm and with a gun before.. Dealing in PA will mean dealing with locals, which is even more miserable than Vegas.. The only people you'll deal to are the people that cant afford to gamble, people that lose their rent/paychecks etc.. Its a very sad and depressing business..

Only positive is $$.. Its great money, but I'd take a major paycut to do anything else, anything..

Do yourself a favor dude and stay away.. If you need to take this job, have a 5 year plan.. Dabble in something else like insurance, real estate, taxes, (any business you can run for yourself part time) so you have something to fall back on after you've had it being a dealer..

Trust me, I've been in this business long enough, all over the country and 90% of dealers are miserable phucks like me.. This is no joke!!

What kind of cashola are we talking? I'm in Morgantown, WV and could easily travel to one of these job fair things in PA(if around the Pittsburgh casinos)

I'd guess $15-20 hour typically unless you keep your own tokes ( poker), or work at an elite place like Wynn.

I don't see where it is so physically demanding, no more so than....

construction
warehouse
stocking shelves
waiting tables

it's not like you're digging ditches, or crab fishing in the Bering sea...

Deal poker, or don't deal at all. What you really want to be is a slot attendant. Way better tips.

seems like a dead end. read bigbee's post. not sure if anyone could be more emphatic about saying stay away. yet no one acknowledged his post and everyone is pissed they can't get in on the nightmare.

It was in the papers a few weeks ago. It was passed. Just gonna take 6-12 months to get the tables in and get staff trained
