Mike Nolan is the only real candidate that was available, and Dom Capers didn't want the job. He really had no choice.

It isn't ego. He had no choice once Capers said he didn't want to become DC and wanted to stay as a position coach.

As for Mike Nolan, he's not going to hire someone McDaniels fired. They share the same philosophy of playing a bend-not-break defense while news out of Denver said that Mike Nolan wanted a blitzing defense. You can't win the AFC with a blitzing defense - Baltimore and the Jets blitz and Peyton Manning picked it apart once he figured it out.

Jets and Balt are forced to blitz because they have no pass rushers. Blitz is the way to go with all these robotic qbs the nfl leans to these days.
