Barman ?

I think it is surely borderline entrapment, and at least too much manpower spent on simple car theft ?

They had an episode on This American Life on it.

Technically it is not entrapment. It amazing that police departments will tie-up a half dozen detectives and all the other expences that go with that.
Considering they hate going after car thieves, you could tell the police who stole your car and that their fingerprints are on the car, they would not even go see the suspect.
When they do occationally arrest a car thief the never goes to jail???????????

More than a half dozen here. Try maybe 24. Parking lot stings daily and catch 10-15 people a day doing BMV's. Auto theft is huge in a big city like Houston or Dallas. million dollar a month... You think they should be doing something else?? Tell me what other crime rakes up those kind of numbers.

I'd have executed most of them already on prior felonies, if I was the judge !

IMO, too much effort with the bait car.

It's certainly not entrapment, since the vehicle is not capable of making an illegal agreement with the potential thief(ves).

Careful, my Connecticut brother....You'll make some people think we smoked some peace pipe together.

:smoker2:

I tend to agree with the post above from nhoj that intervening on the actions of people who are stealing vehicles is a good use of police resources.

"To Protect and Serve"

Now do I think that this particular tactic is the best?

I am unqualified to offer an alternative strategy that might produce equal or better results for equal or less expenditures (money and manpower).

I will say that it's certain that the only people being arrested in these type operations are people who - with premeditation - engage in high thievery.

I'd kind of want to blow these guts away, Barman....but I'd need to review past criminal histories, before, to make my 99% , closer to 100%

I would assume it's similar in principle as having an undercover police woman go out on a hooker walk and have some john solicit sexual favors for money from her. As long as she is not the one doing the soliciting it's not entrapment. Likewise, a car cannot solicit itself to be stolen.

I thought of that , kind of consider it entrapment also, I say put the police to catch higher level criminals, instead of expending a lot of effort on rather ordinary car thieves, we can get them later, and kill them.

"its not entrapment because they didn't force you to come anywhere near the car, sit in the car, turn ignition and then also drive off."

this is direct quote from the show tonight by the officers.

Doug, you might want to muster up the moxie to tell your wife you're divorcing her and move out before working your way up to Vigilante Executioner

Just watched a COPS episode a few days ago and they were planting bicycles around Arizona seeing if someone would take them. What a waste of time.
