Tracy McGrady is reportedly headed to Sacramento, but is it just a layover on his way to New York?

Multiple media reports last night say the Kings and Rockets have agreed in principle to a deal that would send Kevin Martin and three other players to Houston in return for McGrady and forwards Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey.

But that might just be the start.

As the teams hammer out the details today, there are reports the Knicks are still involved, intent on landing McGrady and unloading Jared Jeffries.

If no deal with the Knicks is made, the Rockets and Kings are still expected to go through with the swap. And the Kings could still buy out McGrady's $22.5 million deal by March 1st, which would allow McGrady to sign wherever he wanted and be eligible for the playoffs.

Sources: McGrady sent to Knicks in 3-team deal

The Rockets, Kings and New York Knicks have agreed to terms that will expand the Houston-Sacramento deal into a three-way trade that lands Tracy McGrady with the Knicks, according to NBA front-office sources.

The Knicks will acquire McGrady and Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento, sources said.

The Rockets get Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries from New York and will have the right to swap first-round picks with New York in 2011 as well as take on New York's 2012 first-round pick.

A source close to the negotiations told ESPN NBA Insider Chad Ford that the Knicks' pick is top-1 protected in 2011 and top-5 protected in 2012.
Sacramento obtains Houston's Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey and New York's Larry Hughes.

To me, this is a huge problem the league needs to address. When teams are putting player salary slots ahead of winning, why should the public run out and spent $200 for a pair of tix?

I agree. It still boggles my mind that teams make trades with the express point of acquiring an expiring contract. Or dumping contracts.

The biggest piece of this deal for the Knicks, is dumping Jeffries' contract and the $8M+ they would have owed him next year. Frees up cap space for the free agent hunt next season.

The Bulls have played this game with expiring contracts ever since Tim Duncan was a F/A. Why would a stud want to go to a team with no foundation? And why would anyone want to go to NY? Blame Isiah all you want, but it was Scott Layden who did more damage than anyone.

I would think the main motivation for a player to go to NY would be to bring basketball back to prominence in NYC. There are a lot of rabid fans who are dying to cheer for a good team, which the Knicks haven't had in years. League obviously would love it. I won't be surprised if the Le Bron says no to the Knicks. Still with all that cap room, Knicks should be able to sign at least one stud, maybe two.

World #1..how exactly, bro?

i think we'll see several guys who just want the experience of playing together .

at least 2 huge names and maybe 2 second tier free agents.

the huge names will take less money cause they already have more money than they can spend.

why not go and rebuild the knicks ..

I don't know, though. The Knicks have made so many bad decisions the past few years. No offense, but what makes you think they will get it together in a year's time? Besides, if their owner is only half as bad as the Indians' owner (they're brothers)....fuhgetabout it!!

i think they get lebron and bosh. mcgrady stays and they pick up another 1 or 2 good players.

not even that owner could screw up those guys if they indeed want to come there.

they have too much money to spend not to land 2 of the biggest names in the game

Good points. We'll see, I guess. I may be in denial, but I don't think LeBron will go if the Cavs win or at least make it to the finals. I can see D Wade and Bosh going there though.
