I decided to finally do it, I have discovered my niche for this market and how I can help the community, and how to raise money...

I have a couple of questions for any lawyers or those that have started a non profit before...

I need to raise money before I can file all the paper work...I was told I need around of a year of expenses upfront... Can those people that donate money now be given a tax credit once the non profit is approved 8 months or so from now?

If not, what do most companies do to raise the money before they are official...

Also, I was told to see if a Lawyer in my area would do this pro bono since this is a non profit.. Is this normal? Would I have much success trying to find a lawyer to work with us for free?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

You really think the degenerates on here (self included) have ever started their own 501c3?

Child please.

You start out by saying that you decided to it and you know what you're doing and then you ask questions that say that you have no clue what you are doing? Start by getting your answers from a source other than The RX.

To know one aspect of something isn't to know everything... I love the RX regardless what this forum main purpose is. There is someone here that knows the answer and will be willing to share... Because a gambling forum is my forum of choice doesn't mean I don't know what I am doing... SMH @ you.

A forum is a community. All different types of people here, nothing wrong with diversity. I don't expect everyone to know the answer. It only takes one person and I know there are some lawyers here, and probably some that are involved with nonprofits.. That's what I enjoy about it, no matter what the subject, someone knows something. Take your negativity elsewhere...:>(

who told you that you needed to have a years expenses up front? was that a suggestion or a requirement? who is to say what your expense are?

if it were a requirement then just say your expenses are $1 a year.

if it were a suggestion, that's good advice.

have you ever ran a business?

how many degrees do you hold?

maybe you should work for a non profit for a few months to see how it all works.

what are your qualifications to run a non-profit? are you going to have a board of directors? who will set on the board?

why should people trust you with donations?

not trying to knock you but these are basic questions the public will have.

good luck

I don't know why there is such a lack of confidence surrounding me doing this...

I had to double check and make sure this thread wasn't entitled "100% Can't Lose Game of my Life"...

I am qualified. I am experienced. I am educated. I thought about doing this for a couple years. Everything has just fallen into place at this time.

I was seeing if someone could answer a couple, what I thought would be, simple questions...

as a female asking for business advice on a gambling forum you need to be a little more thicked skinned, you'll learn that in the real world, men treat each other harshly but don't mean any harm by doing it.

i'll try again:

Can you please tell us where you obtained the information that led you to believe that you needed to have a years expenses up front?

Did this person tell you that it was a requirement?

or was it just a suggestion?

thank you so much, and i eagerly await hearing from you.

HAHAH I don't know whether to laugh... or be ashamed.... I am a man. That is me and my girlfriend in the avatar... I must of misplaced my man cards...

I spoke to a lawyer about 4 years ago, and more recently a paralegal about starting the non profit... The lawyer said nothing about the amount of money needed to start the nonprofit besides the $1200-$1400 in cost to file paper work and registation fees to become tax exempt..

The Paralegal recently told me that I need a sample budget and enough money for a year of operation. Obviously if that's the case then I need to raise money before hand, but I want my donors to get the tax benefits. Thus the reason for asking my question "Can those people that donate money now be given a tax credit once the non profit is approved 8 months or so from now? "

I was asking these questions here, not for money, but because I enjoy this forum and see solid advice on Off Topic issues constantly. I suppose I didn't expect my personal ability to be questioned... Then again when asking such basic question maybe it comes across that this is something I just decieded to do....

But no, thats not the case. From 2005, in making career / life goals, a non profit was on there... I am just getting the ball rolling on this..

JGriff you are an attorney right?

Not for nuttin', but I'm reasonably certain that simply taking a few hours one evening to Search for "How To Start a 501c3" would yield you far more useful information than randomly polling our Fine Feathered Fraternity here at the RxForums.

I work exclusively with raising money for non-profit organizations, PM maybe I can help or point you in the right direction.
