I got a couple that want the Taj as a wedding cake. I quoted them a price, it is $61 over their budget, he said he would sign the cotract if I dropped the price $61, if not, he would have to think about it.

I am already giving the guy a helluva deal on the cake, but he wants more. I can see asking, but he was persistent with it.

I just read the little ceasars thread about losing a customer for .21c.

What would you do?

depends on what kind of mark-up exists on a wedding cake, how bad you need the business, etc.

I wouldn't try to barter on that, personally.

Add some special ingredients, maybe ?

Like Doug said, if this guy is a one shot customer, no, tell him the price is what it is, now if this guy is a steady, or a guy who brings you, or can bring you business, then yeah, work with him

Bigbet....This is the world today, and it makes me mad, no one and I mean no one wants to pay the price for anything anymore. I have a 1.5 million dollar catering department and there is not a day that goes by were, someone wants a deal..So screw them, I have them start higher and then tell them to talk to the Chef and come back with the real price. This way they think they beat me up, and got there deal!

LOL. Screw them? Just because people are trying to save a few bucks in this economy?

G: :lolBIG:

you would be amazed at some of the stories I hear why they want a discount. Use to piss me off, I just overlook it now.

The guy has never bought anything from me. While I know it is a small amount, I will be turning away business if I take this cake.

I only take so many weddings per weekend, if I take this cake, I could be passing on 3-4 potential weddings that weekend.

His other "hoop" is, I will pay you 80% and after I see the cake and "like it" i will give you the other 20%, yea, ok.

He has seen my work on shows and in my albums, he knows what I am capable of doing.

Sometimes you can barter...like on a car.

I don't go to Wal-mart and try to get them down to $35 0n a $40 toaster oven.

I'd never try that with a baker, would ( pun), and have done it with a lumberyard.

I'd never even think of trying it with a caterer, baker, butcher, etc.

Pick your spots

Doug, i hear ya, but since I am not a big corp. they think they can just talk to the "owner" and i can get a deal.

or if they know me they think they get a discount, amazes me.

Friends, family, etc. all want discounts. if i dicounted everyone that wanted it, i would discount myself right out of business.

IMO it's all about how he approached you.

If he's a dick - so be it. Maybe make his wedding cake look like a dick and say that's your "artistic" interpretation of the Taj.

Imagine the look on the bride. Hell, it may be worth it to make 2 cakes .... the real Taj and then a second cake shaped like a dick and show him and the bride that one first ......

I know little about making wedding cakes ( etc.). I assume you're pretty good at what you do.

You probably can't increase production by like 5X, to compensate for discounts.

I'd think ....well that's the price on the cake, .....

EDIT: Removed racist slur - come on brother, you're smarter than that

Doug, thing is, this cake will take 12 hours of man time on it. The average cake takes 45mins-1.5 hours depending on difficulty.

He doesn't need an explanation other than, that's my price. If ya like it, lets roll with it, if not, I need to know ASAP so I do not pass up potential clients in the next couple weeks while he is rolling his quaters.

When did you do cakes?

Never !

I said I have little knowledge of making cakes.... like nothing, not like I said I know a little about cakes, meaning I know something.

I know nothing about this, sorry for the confusion, BB.

I have no knowledge of wedding cakes.

simple misunderstanding...

I could have used the word nothing instead of little, no biggie.

all is cool.

Yeah , I have no qualifications as a cake maker, baker, or whatever you properly call artist that makes your wedding cake.

English is a tough language !

Just prefixing my comment with an "a" changes the meaning....

I know little meaning nothing ( by me)
I know a little means I know I lot.

Check this write up by a good NBA capper, with not so great English skills, but he is killing it...

Los Angeles Lakers @ Memphis Grizzlies

Lakers have managed well the absence of Kobe Bryant. They only lost last game, by one point, at home against Celtics. But that was a special game, where the smell of playoffs was huge. So, it was difficult to win without their best player, but that situation will not happen tonight. Tonight Kobe will return to action, and after his loss, we can conclude easily that Kobe makes his team play under a lower pace this season. Besides that, the team is improving their defense a lot, and in the last 5 games they only allowed more than 90 points to Warriors.

Memphis is struggling a lot lately without 4 losses in a row at home. Their last win at home was against the Lakers, 95-93, and since them, they are passing a letdown with a 2-6 record. Their offense is pretty good, as they can score easily in the paint and behind it. This month, they haven't reach 100 points at home in any game, including only 87 points with an OT in their last home game against Miami.

We can expect a low score game, as Kobe will return and will probably put the team playing with a lower pace. Lakers defense has improving lately so far, and on road, they are the kind of team that tries to keep a low pace always. Memphis are not passing a good moment and knows that have to play with calm and try to improve their defense as wells, and will be more focus in that than in offense.

Pick: Under 198.5 -110 (1.91) The Greek

*One unit each always.
