Was it really an 8.8 ?

I think that must be wrong ?

That would level the place, worse than Haiti ?

A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, killing at least 147 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific basin.

chile, from a quality of structure stand point is probably vastly ahead of Haiti

They've had 11 aftershocks in the first 2 and half hours after the earthquake 5 of them measured 6.0 or higher.

WAY stronger, though !

Haiti was a 7, an 8 is 10X stronger than a 7, a 9 is 100X stronger than a 7.

almost a 9, here.. that has to be huge, way bigger than the the one that hit SF in the WS around 1990, and that did some serious damage / lives lost.

started reading the wikipedia article on the tsunami in the Indian Ocean a few years ago (and the earthquake that caused it). Scary stuff in terms of sheer magnitude:

With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches)[5] and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.[6]
