Boggs said that he had preliminary discussion with Padres general manager Jed Hoyer, but the talks were so superficial that "you couldn’t characterize it as a negotiation." And when you compare the worth of your client to the $180 million Mark Teixeira made with the Yankees, you can probably understand why they began to shy away. That's not to say Gonzalez isn't worthy of a big contract, only that the Padres will not be the club to give it to him. With any luck, the Padres will be able to find a similar haul to what the Rangers got for Teixeira at the trade deadline during the 2007 season.
