This is an interesting topic, at least to me.
Haiti's quake happened right smack in the middle of Port au Prince, the capital, where more than 1 million people live in subpar conditions, and Im being nice calling them subpar. Their building codes are almost nonexistent. Haiti is basically the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The quake came, they were completely unprepared for it, and everything got flattened. Kinda similar to when u see quakes in Iran, it seems like just about any kind of tremor kills a few thousand over there.
The Quake in Chile flattened everything within close range, but it did occur over 100 kms away from a 'big' city like Concepcion and it did occur in the sea. It's not like it didnt destroy dozens and dozens of bridges, roads, towns, etc etc. The tsunami alone destroyed several towns and the dead are still being counted. Many bridges were completely torn apart, highways as well. It is complete chaos in many places down there.
Its not Haiti all over again because conditions there are very different. It was already a humanitarian crisis in Haiti BEFORE the quake. Nonetheless, I do think the Chilean government has been a tad arrogant about the 'we dont need much international aid' thing.
All u need is a glance to the Chilean tv channel (which we get down here in CR) and u realize that alot of people are in alot of suffering.
