that's like 50X + times the Haiti one, right ?

Ain't an 8.8 like huge ?

I don't see them needing so much aid, kind of like a non-story ?

WTF ?

Isn't an 8.8 like huge ?

Their building codes are much better. Haiti is a third-world country.

It knocked the earth off it's axis resulting in shorter days. December 21, 2012.

a freaking 8.8 would have leveled Haita,way worse than a 7.

It would knock SF real hard, way more than the 1989 quake

real tough quake , IMO.

I don't know they survived this without a million deaths.

Intensity is not everything on a quake. Duration, the area it hit, direction of movement (up-and-down vs. side-to-side), building regulations, etc.

Plus they said that the epicenter of the quake was a few of miles out in the ocean. Which is why Chile didnt really feel the true extent of the 8.8 quake. And Haiti's quake epicenter was a couple of miles from Port-au-Prince, a densely populated area.

This is an interesting topic, at least to me.

Haiti's quake happened right smack in the middle of Port au Prince, the capital, where more than 1 million people live in subpar conditions, and Im being nice calling them subpar. Their building codes are almost nonexistent. Haiti is basically the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The quake came, they were completely unprepared for it, and everything got flattened. Kinda similar to when u see quakes in Iran, it seems like just about any kind of tremor kills a few thousand over there.

The Quake in Chile flattened everything within close range, but it did occur over 100 kms away from a 'big' city like Concepcion and it did occur in the sea. It's not like it didnt destroy dozens and dozens of bridges, roads, towns, etc etc. The tsunami alone destroyed several towns and the dead are still being counted. Many bridges were completely torn apart, highways as well. It is complete chaos in many places down there.

Its not Haiti all over again because conditions there are very different. It was already a humanitarian crisis in Haiti BEFORE the quake. Nonetheless, I do think the Chilean government has been a tad arrogant about the 'we dont need much international aid' thing.

All u need is a glance to the Chilean tv channel (which we get down here in CR) and u realize that alot of people are in alot of suffering.

You realize that it was just over a millisecond that got shortened? The bigger quakes from previous years shortened us a whole 2 milliseconds! 2012 stuff cracks me up.

As long as they keep exporting Chile con Carne and Chile Rellenos, they'll be OK.

I find it odd that all of this is going on within a months time........ two big quakes, and a months worth of constant snow in the East leading up to 2-3 feet of snow that is still on the ground in March. I remember my Junior year in HS we had baseball tryouts the first week of March (1992 I think) and it was 70 degrees all week! The East coast hasnt even sniffed 40 degrees all of February.

Global something going on.....

Yeah, its like every week or so something fucked up happens. First the quake, then another. As we in the east get pounded by record snow fall for February. Iran with enriched uranium. Afghanistan getting worse. China OWNS us. Slowly im seeing a trend that FUCKED up things are happening at a unreal rate. 2012 has to be the truth. I just feel it comin.....

A coworker of mine was in Santiago, but left Friday morning (quake was early morning Saturday) and was in a remote part of Southern Chile when it happened. Although his return track is now more complicated (and through Argentina instead of Santiago), he had lucky with the leaving town less than 24 hours before it hit.
