No. This LeBron changing his number bullshit is just another money grab by making people buy new uniforms, just like Jordan and Bryant in the past.

I'd vote yes.

Obviously it has to be a very rare circumstance. I just think Jordan transcended the sport. Not just his talent and sucess but also the commercial marketing aspect. The number 23 was very associated with him as well, more so then any other athlete in sport. Face it there are superstars who are unagruably great but people can't name their jersey numbers.

I believe it already done in MLB with Jackie Robinson.

The only other instance I'd vote yes to is Gretsky in hockey. Again because of his greatness, plus the identity with the number 99.

He changed the game not for the better. He changed it from a team sport to an individual sport.

Plus to many greats before him.

No player wears #99 in hockey right now. Nobody would dare wear #99 in hockey, because of the fear they could never live up to Gretzky's greatness, and because they are already showing the respect. If LeBron really had the respect, he wouldn't have worn #23 in the first place.
