A boat the four men were on capsized about 75 miles from shore and the men were forced to cling to the boat in the cold waters to try to stay alive. The accident happened in late February, 2009. It would be 43 hours until rescuers would find Nick Schuyler.
Three of his friends could not make it until the rescuers arrived. Nick Schuyler, who grew up in Chardon, talks to Oprah Winfrey on Thursday March 4, 2010 about that horrific 2009 boating accident that claimed the lives of his three friends and how he struggled to stay alive.
Schulyer has written "Not Without Hope," a book about the tragedy. It was released this week. Schulyer was found on March 2, 2009, at 1:35 p.m. by authorities. He was clinging to that capsized boat, but all of his friends were dead. It was a near two-day ordeal in frigid waters.
More from the Oprah show here including video.
Also, a detailed interview with the survivor by phone was conducted. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has the interview. He tells the paper he hasn't been back on a boat since the accident.
