A surprise name has been added to the list of unrestricted free agents.

The Carolina Panthers released quarterback Jake Delhomme. FOXSports.com was the first to report the news.

Delhomme's agent, Rick Smith, confirmed the move and said Delhomme would wait until Friday to talk to reporters.

Several calls to head coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney have not been returned.

The team has already made a commitment to Matt Moore by offering him a one-year tender worth over $3 million.

Despite recent stories that there would be an open quarterback competition, that obviously is not the case. The job will be Moore's.

"My wife and I are ecstatic right now," Moore said recently, according to published reports. "I was surprised. I didn't know exactly what to expect, to be perfectly honest with you. When my agent called and told me about (the tender), I was really excited and really happy. I think it shows they have a lot of confidence in me, which is reassuring."

Delhomme, 35, has been the Panthers' starting quarterback since 2003. He was 58-40 as a starter.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina general manager Marty Hurney calls it the toughest decision he ever made. Panthers coach John Fox couldn't fight off tears while answering questions.

The Panthers have officially parted ways with Jake Delhomme and declared that Matt Moore will be the starting quarterback going into training camp.

At an emotional news conference Friday morning where both Hurney and Fox choked up, the Panthers announced that Delhomme was one of five veterans released.

The move comes after Delhomme threw a career-high 18 interceptions last season. The Panthers still owe him more than $12.5 million in guaranteed money.

The Panthers also released defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu, and linebackers Na'il Diggs and Landon Johnson in the start of a youth movement.

He got sacked alot last year. Whether it was offensive line breakdowns or Delhomme's lack of mobility or a combination of the two, I guess management finally had had enough. Maybe they felt his on the field leadership qualities were starting to fade and just cound not afford another season with him at the helm. Regardless, even though he had a down year last year, I thought Delhomme always tried to make the most of what he had to work with during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers.

Not sure how happy I am about that Trade.

I would rather Hear about the Jets signing Leon Wasington to a Long term Deal.
Now That would make me Happy ! :103631605

About fucking time.

However, Matt Moore and the words $3Million in a sentence should only be followed by the words lottery winner.

Carolina will figure out after this season that they need a new qb.

Matt Moore sucked at UCLA, sucked at Oregon State and continues to suck on the back of an exhaust pipe.

I had looked around earlier and didn't see this thread.I was wondering why no one had posted this news yet so I posted a similar thread in the NFL forum a couple of hours ago.Now I see that you had beat me to the punch BAS,well done sir:103631605.
Anyways...I think this was a good move by Carolina,it shows that they are paying attention and are trying to make progress with this team.Allthough Matt Moore has been named as starting QB for now, head officials did say that other changes are not out of question ,including at the QB position.I think that Matt Moore has potential to be a productive QB for this team but I also think that other options should be explored and taken advantage of if it seems to be a better oppurtunity for the team.

b.a. you see is an east coaster...& lacks respect for the soft west coasters...which 'crime-time' is...you want to laugh real hard?

well...youtube cromartie's attempted tackle on greene in the playoff game...oh man...that will turn any frown...upside down...

however...when it comes down to athletic ability & make-up speed to cover...there is no cb better than 'cro'...he is so special that way...rivera did not use ryan's style of 'd'...so you just watch cromartie become all-that-he-can-be under rex...

imo...'crime-time' is THE BEST COVER CORNER in the nfl...he is better than revis...& will show it all season under rex...
