I'm talking the debit card the state gives out.

I see folks using them on candy, and all kinds of junk food shit, pisses me off.

I would have to be pretty bad off before I would use it. I actually don't think I could bring myself to use the assistance. So many milking the system it is sickening.

I see them more than real cc's when checking out at WALMART.

I was dealing a 5-10 NO LIMIT POKER and this guy was in at least a DIME and he reached in his wallet for another $100 buy in and of course the RED WHITE & BLUE welfare care was in there....

ITS OUT OF HAND!!!

Most anyone who says they wouldn't accept it will never come close to being eligible. I never will be either, but why wouldn't I accept it if offered? I have a couple family members who earn 10 to 20 times what I do and I gladly accept their cash gifts. The governments budget runs into the trillions, how can anyone say they would have reservations about taking a handout from them?

If I did everything that I could do to find a job and try to support my family it it was not enough I might do it.

I would have already sold everything I could and turn off the phone, cable, and internet. U*nlike the scum I see here in the D. Hell they have 60inch tv's and never had a job.

Those people are scum

Had this country gone into depression, you'd be surprised what you would do to put food on the table.

Blame the states for allowing candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, etc, to be allowed for purchase with those cards.

Yep. I was behind a woman in line at the supermarket who paid with one of those cards a couple weeks ago. She was buying all kinds of pure crap...candy, soda, beer, cigarettes, cat food, etc. These are "necessities"? Junk food may not be the best choice, but people do need food to survive. Same can't be said for alcohol and smokes. I'd have no problem with a law restricting cards from buying certain items.

As for the original question, my family came to the U.S. penniless, didn't know anyone, and didn't speak any English. Not sure how much more "disadvantaged" you can get than that. None of them ever accepted welfare, yet we turned out OK.

I've received unemployment before (who hasn't been laid off at some point in this past decade?), but didn't feel bad about it when I realized the amount of taxes I've paid in my lifetime is probably a few dozen times more than what I collected in UE...

i agree. People that gamble in which 90% or higher would for damn sure accept food stamps if could..

Sounds more like jealously as crazy as that sounds. Those people you talking about prolly think gamblers are scum. works both ways.

The reason why they're broke is because no matter where their riches come from, they value booze, cigarettes, junk food and scratch tickets more than anything else money can buy. So when you give them money, why would anyone expect them to spend it on something different, like fruits and vegetables. When eligibility requirements insist a person have such a small amount of assets, it is in their best interest to throw money away on whatever vices they have

We all agree these programs have problems. That wasn't the question. I'm curious as to why anyone who is eligible would ever turn it down

I would if it meant not starving, especially my family.

I have no problem accepting free medical care from the VA as result of my service to my country in Viet Nam. I feel that by serving my country during wartime and seeing a lot of action while doing it that I am not really accepting welfare. In my heart I know I earned the right to the health care benefits. I only use them on rare occasions anyway.

Welfare is another story, would I accept food stamps or I guess now they use a pre-funded debit cards, yes but only under when the most dire of circumstances dictate that while willing to work at any job that paid even minimum wage there still were none available forcing me to starve or resort to crime to survive. Under those conditions I would apply for help but I would buy real food while continuing to search for work.

Luckily I have always been able to feed myself and loved ones who depended on me be earning a living ever since I had my first job, a paper route 50 years ago. I have always been able to work therefore never needed welfare.

My younger sister (she is 58) had the business she worked for go belly up in the difficult economic times that have been prevelant recently in the US is collecting unemployment but will not apply for food stamps. I do my best to help her out when she needs help most. Luckily there was an unemployment check extension approved for people like her who are willing to work but can't find a job.

She got a call today for a job that starts in late April so the extension is making it possible for her to keep her dignity and not apply for welfare. The job pays $14 an hour for 40 hours a week and she will still have to struggle to make ends meet. I just paid her heath insurance premium last week before she lost the coverage. A lot of people like her, loyal hard workers, are having a difficult time these days.

You should not judge everyone on welfare as there are many willing to work but can't find jobs so they depend on food stamps to survive. I know that there is also a lot of abuse in the system.

A good job that earns a livable wage is a valuable thing. Something not to be taken for granted.

Maybe i should rephrase it.

most that need it cant get it, those that are lazy get it with no problem.

by all means, military vets should be first in line, as well as free medical. i think the military should get a lot more than what they get

The welfare program has all good intentions. It should be used as a tool for the down and out to get back on there feet, however Ive seen first hand this program used and abused. It has become a crutch for many.Ive seen
children of parents on welfare, grow up and follow in there parents footsteps and wait for there check each month.I agree, this program does
have its place but it should not be a way of life.

As far as myself using the program I would have to be in dire need,
with no other outs.
