I am having a procedure on Friday to help my herniated discs in my neck. I have three of them, but one is really bad. Its been nagging me for a long time now and I cant wait for the day that I am not in pain. I cant live like this anymore and I am getting the shots at the Hospital on Friday. I just would like to know about recovery time, success rate, and just plain old does it solve the problem? The spinal surgeon I see, who is doing the operation told me if this does not work that full blown surgery is gonna be needed.... I already did six weeks of PT so this is the next step....

Thanks for the input in advance...

Ok, First....You say Procedure & Operation. It is NOT an Operation.
Even though you go to say like a Day-Op.....
( at least that's where I went when I did it )

They give a local ( so you should be 1/2 to 3/4 Out ) and it takes about 15 mins.

As soon as you are Up, they will give you something to Drink & Eat ( apple juice & Crackers ) and you can get up and walk...They will release you.

You should feel better after 10-14 days.....and it should Last a long time.

Oh, BTW.....You will need 3 Treatments, every Other week.

BOL !

I was just using the terminology that was told to me... The surgeon that I am seeing gave me some different information.... appreciate the feedback. I assume you had this procedure done? I hope you are right and that the pain stops for a long time... that would be great.

Thanks for your input.... I will have to ask about the "3 times" cause that was not mentioned at all.

Also had the shots and the first shot made me feel like a new man the next day. My whole outlook changed and it was the first time i was pain free for almost 4months. Pain came back and i did the procedure again and this time the relief was short lived. About 25% better and didn't last as long. I talked to a good golf friend who is a othopedic surgeon and also has neck probles. He had an operation and he advised me not to get the operation and stay with rehab. I did that doing rehab at home religiously . It took about three months before i felt any different but it is about 60% better and i can live with it and i take ultracet and soma's from time to time. I got an inversion table and found that 5 minutes a day did wonders. I bought mine at Costco at the advice of my Dr friend and it felt better immediately. I still do isometric neck exercises every morning before i get out of bed. It wakes me up and doesn't feel like i'm really doing anything i guess because i'm still half asleep.

If you have to get a cervical disc removed opt for a disc arthroplasty (artificial disc) instead of a fusion (ACDF - interbody and plate with screws). A few great companies offer them to surgeons but the issue is with insurance coverage depending on your carrier and geographic location. I am a consultant for one of these companies so PM me for more details if you like.

yep - lumbar has been around a while. Lots of people have had great sucesss. Insurance became an issue when Charite had complications in many patients (surgeons not trained correctly, product design, etc) and patients had to have it removed and then a traditional fusion surgery causing insurance companies to have to double pay. They then made coverage and reimbursement a huge issue (more difficult in some areas than others). Cervical has seen great sucess and Synthes Prodisc-C has been implanted in Europe for many years and the last few in the states with phenominal sucess.

If you are a candidate for this type of surgery - fight for it - it is worth it.

Yeah...I remember back when i had it done. There were Only 11 surgeons in the U.S that were Trained to do this Surgery.

Also, being that I had owned a business that really doesn't have Health Insurance. I Don't even want to say, How much it Cost !!
( But I'm sure you know ) LOL

I had this procedure done in my lower back and it relieved my pain for about 4 months. It's not the most comfortable procedure but I didn't care considering the pain I was in.

Wish you luck though. People without neck/back injuries are clueless as to the impact the injury has on your daily life.

I had neck / disc surgery 12 years ago and am fine today. Not sure what a shot is going to do for you. Have you considered spinal decompression. It is the stretching of the spine, slowly, over time. I've have some reoccurring issues and this has been great for me. Good luck, I've been there.:103631605

Well, I had the procedure done at 1pm and was literally home by 2pm. Someone mentioned it only takes 15 minutes and they were right on the nose.... the worst part was the IV. But I have feeling in my finger tips again and the pain is not there in my neck, shoulder, and upper arm.... no more electric shocks down my arm either....... Life is good!! They put me out completely, and I woke up 20 mins later in another room, guess it was the recovery room... I have had several surgeries in my life and I always find "coming to" is such a shocker.... Anyway, now I can be of service to someone who has a problem like I do (did) in the future. Well, the anestesia is wearing off so its time to lay it down til the puck drops around 7:30.... Thanks again fellas for the advice and well wishes!! I am pain free now aside from where the needle went in.

OH, btw.... I didnt take the advice of keeping my eyes closed, so when I was wheeled into the O.R. I saw three huge needles.... lets just say I am glad I was put all the way under....:howdy:

My wife had the injections in her L4 & L5. No help, in fact it became worse, but that was in Las Vegas (bad idea). We went to UCLA spine center and they wanted us to go through their pain management clinic first. More injections with immeadiate success but they always wore off. After a series of them they did a nerve ablation which is very painful in itself. You can't be sedated because they poke needles in you till they find the right spot. Immeadiate success but it also wore off. They tried everything to NOT operate, physical theraphy, pain pills etc.

Finally after three operations she had a nuerotransmitter implanted in her back. It's about the size of a deck of cards with wires attached to the offending nerves. She has a hand held remote that can be directed where the pain of the moment is comming from. The tarnsmitter sends out electrical signals into the nerve that trick it into tingling instead of pain.

She gets some relief out of it. It works better on some patients than others of course. She'll be in pain forever.
