Helton will earn $4.9 million in 2012 and $5 million in 2013. As part of the agreement, Helton will defer $13.1 million beginning next season, a move which will provide the Rockies more financial flexibility. The club previously held a $23 million club option for 2012 with a $4.6 million buyout, so this is a pretty unselfish move by Helton. The 36-year-old first baseman batted .325/.416/.489 with 15 home runs and 86 RBI last season. With the new deal, the former 1995 first-round pick has ensured that he will almost certainly retire as a member of the Rockies.
