Calling a 6th grade student a loser is a little over the top....Know

Is this relating to students or alienating students?

The guy has been a middle school teacher for 12 years, must be doing something right.

Controversy over the teaching practices of an Enka Middle School teacher strikes a nerve with parents. Thursday night, we introduced you to a Patty Clement, who accuses her daughter's 6th grade teacher, Rex Roland, of bullying her and calling her a "loser." On Friday morning, the 11-year-old was threatened at school and later that night, Clement says her daughter got almost 100 threatening text messages. While Clement still wants her daughter's teacher suspended, other parents and former students of Roland say he's a terrific teacher.

Patty Clement says Roland first wrote "loser" on her daughter's paper back in November. Clement says she spoke with the principal at Enka and the principal said she would put a stop to it. Clement says it happened again just a few weeks ago.

"His techniques need to change," says Clement.

Not everyone agrees with her. Some former students and parents are defending and explaining Roland's teaching style.

"A lot of the students he has are academically gifted students, and so one of the ways that he would joke with them would be if they scored a 110, he always gave extra credit, so if they scored a 110, 120 on a paper, he would have a joke on it ‘loser’," says parent, Kathy Andrews.

Roland did apologize to Clement, but she wants him suspended. She says his behavior is unacceptable and so is the harassment and teasing her daughter now faces at school.

"I don't know what we're going to do, but I’ll fight to the end."

The Buncombe County School District says the investigation into this situation is ongoing and that it is a personnel matter

I know 1st hand what kind of effect a teacher picking on 1 student can have. Maybe thats not the case here and maybe it is but either way the mother is doing the right thing in finding out....I had a very similar situation with 1 of mine years ago and it effected the person ...well to this very day.
I let it go and moved the person away from the bad teacher instead of fighting it.....2 or 3 years later the teacher was fired after doing it to another student and it got out of hand.
I feel bad for not standing up for my kid back then....
And this may not be whats happening in this case at all but i cheer the mother for fighting and getting to the bottom of it........

An 11-year-old is being harassed and receiving physical threats after her mother complained about her teacher. Patty Clement criticized Enka Middle School teacher, Rex Roland, after he wrote the word "loser" on two of her daughter's assignments. Clement says her daughter is now getting texts, emails and Facebook messages calling her names and threatening physical violence.

Messages sent to the 11-year-old call her a “freak.” Some use gay slurs, others use obscenities. One says the 6th grader did a "bad thing" and for that she must be punished. Another message says “I hope you grow up to work third shift at McDonalds because the strip joint turned you down.”

This all started when Patty Clement spoke out on Thursday. She says Mr. Roland wrote “loser” on a November assignment. Clement says she met with the principal and the principal said she would put a stop to it. Clement says just a few weeks ago, Roland wrote “loser” on another assignment.

Roland did apologize and said it's how he jokes with the students, but Clement wants him suspended. Our attempts to contact Mr. Roland directly were unsuccessful. The Buncombe County School District says they're doing everything they can for the safety and well being of this student.

The only loser is the teacher; can't come up with somthing better then that, you shouldn't be teaching. I don't care how long he's been teaching, there are hacks in every field who have been slipping by for 15-20 years, don't mean their a good at what they do. This BS will probably stay with that kid for the rest of their life. If this shit happened to my kid there would be hell to pay.

What's even more laughable is that this guy had done it before and
was still employed.

Your government public school system at work.

*Any* teacher stupid and ignorant enough to write "loser" on
a student's paper needs to immediately be removed. Period.

The fact that he wasn't speaks wonders about our public school
systems in this country.

If that was my kid, I'd take a look at the context of the note and make sure i understood what had happened to prompt the teacher and look to see if there was anmy justification on any level. I can't think of aany context off hand that it is even remotley appropriate, even if in a humorous light. that said - I'd kick the teachers ass and staple a loser note to his forehead

Do NOT fire the teacher.

Reassign him to remedial classes at low-income schools.

Put him in a high school remedial Algebra class, or a remedial English class and teach them math or how to read.

See what kind of "teacher" he really is when he doesn't have angels for students from educated families.

He wouldn't "be there" the next day after he writes loser on the "wrong" kid's papper.

Most teachers have a good heart. But some of them are screwed up just like any other percentage play in the human race.

These are the kids I currently teach.

I would LOVE for him to switch spots with me for a week. He wouldn't last.

the kid gets an A+ on a test and the teacher writes "loser" on the paper.

He should have written the mom a note saying "EPIC FAIL" for her understanding of sarcastic encouragment.

The best intervention for a student being bullying is parent involvement :howdy:
