Instead of going to a non emergency clinic and possibly flushing $200 down the toilet, I see what I can find out from the resident medical experts.

I slammed the lower part of my leg below the knee on a wooden dresser. I don't think I have ever hit my leg that hard when not playing a sport.

It swelled to the size of a golf ball within 5 minutes. There was a cut, but no blood dripping out of it.

The swelling has mostly gone away, but the cut looks kind of nasty. It doesn't look that deep, but it is wide. Maybe a quarter inch. The length is a little over an inch. Since there never was any blood flowing out of it, it makes me feel I don't need stiches. But the width of it concerns me.

If I do possibly need stitches, what is the longest I can wait without risking infection?

Dude, go to the doc.

They will probably give you some antibiotics for infection. Or, just keep it clean and let it heal itself.

First aid for cuts.

Bumps and bruises are damage that occurs in the soft tissue under the skin. Under the following conditions, there is no need to call for medical assistance when a person suffers a cut, scrape, bump, or bruise:
  • The injury is small (less than 1/2 inch around).<LI sizset="56" sizcache="1">There is no bleeding, or only slight bleeding. Make sure you follow the universal guidelines, such as wearing protective gloves, to prevent the spread of HIV or any other dangerous infections. (See How to Treat Wounds and Stop Bleeding <!--Chapter 3 PG 24.-->for first aid care for bleeding.)
  • The victim is not in excessive pain.
  • The victim does not feel numbness or tingling.
  • The person is not suffering any paralysis.
  • The victim does not seem to have any broken bones or dislocation at the joints. (If the victim is in a great amount of pain and the shoulder, leg, arm, or ankle appears to be lying or hanging at an awkward ankle, there is a good chance he or she has a broken bone or a dislocation.)

Good morning BB - only 4:36AM here in CR. With the time change we are now on the time equivalent of Rocky Nountain Time. Even though it is only an hour it will take me a few weeks to adjust to getting up an hour earlier everyday except my off days (Erdnesday and Thursday).

BOL today, wil..

If I go to the doctor, that mean x-rays. It is going to be at least $300. I don't want to go to the doctor and hear, "you have a bone bruise." I would be willing to bet there is one person on this board who can help me and possibly save a few $$$.

Alright, here is an update. I may have a more serious issue.

I got up to go to the bathroom. Minor pain when I walk. After I get back to my bed, the area begins throbbing in pain. It feels like "something is broken" pain. It is only getting worse as time goes on which might be normal for something like this before it heals. The swelling is the same as when I went bed. No bruising.

I am sure there are some ex football players on here that know something about pain in non serious injuries. I don't know how bad the pain can be without something serious being wrong.

Thanks for the link Wil.

From the sounds of this last post I would not wait or even worry about the cost (easy for me to say I know). You could have a real injury that needs professional attention the sooner the better, go to an ER asap.

Get well soon, wil.

rub some yayo on it...

it will kill the pain because yayo is considered an anesthetic...

then rub some between your teeth and gums and go kick your neighbors dog

How the hell did you hit it on the dresser?

Were you playing Spider Man jumping across your room and missed the landing?

Go get this checked...

You can't wait but so many hours before a lac is too old to sew (ie contaminated with bacteria).

Get your tetanus shot updated (if necessary)

Let them clean it up and (sew it up, if necessary)

And probably put you on antibiotics.

I hope they put you on Augmentin (you may have gotten the generic which could have been labled Amoxil/Clav.)...

Amoxil is spitting at a dog bite. Augmentin is pretty much the DOC (drug of choice)...

I have suffered similar injuries as you describe. Use double doses of ibuprofen (4 x 200) every four to six hours. The swelling and the associated reduction in flexibility to your knee should recede within 36-48 hours.
