We had a "sandwich shop" in town, you walk into the back room and there was a table with all of the days odds written on a sheet of paper and a bunch of small paper slips and pencils to right down your bets. You hand the guy your slip with your money, he puts a rubber band around it and throws it in his box. If you won, you could pick it up the next day. This was the last place of its kind that I know of in my town and it closed around 8-10 years ago. I have a friend who goes to a lot of poker games in town and he says that sometimes there is a sports guy there who will take action. Do these local, post up, pick up the next day sports betting places still exist anywhere?

I'm sure there are a select few who still operate on the east coast, but they are few and far between now. Those days have passed for the most part.

Las Vegas accounts for about 1% - 2% of the sports handle in the US. The rest goes off shore and to locals.

The proliferation of online betting has made the local/underground less necessary. With that said, the local/underground operations still exist, just on a smaller scale.

My buddy's dad used to tell us about places like this in the mid 60's when they would have sandwiches, donuts, coffee and etc and they would have a big board with all the games on there and place your bets with the man and hand him the cash and if you won you came back the next time to pickup the winnings.

Exactly. In Steubenville, Ohio or across the river in Weirton, WV you could walk into storefront books, not hidden but on main streets, make your laydown and get a machine generated ticket.
All up & down Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania gambling, all forms, was wide open but sports betting was king. Youngstown may have been the most wide open of all cities ever in the US.

Good, good times and atmosphere.
