Bertsch suffered the injury while moving items underneath his RV in limited visibility. He had pins inserted and was fitted for a splint. "It was an unfortunate, freak accident," he said. "I shouldn’t have been doing it in the dark ... When it happened, I was just in shock." It explains why he withdrew from that event and hasn't played since. But it doesn't account for his run of maladies since late 2006, when he was first affected by vertigo. In 2008, he had the confusion over the medical extension that led to reduced status on the PGA TOUR. Then, he broke his foot in December of that year. "I had a decent start [to 2010] and was starting to show some good signs," Bertsch concluded. "My foot wasn’t 100 percent but it was becoming more of a non-issue. But now everything is put on hold and I have a whole new thing to deal with. But there’s nothing I can do about it."
