The wife and I are guardians for my nephews 17 month old boy. He is in the AirForce and will be getting deployed to Kuwait first than to Iraq. His wife died last year in an car acident just outside of Vegas about a year ago. They were on thier way back to Vandenburg AFB.

So now we are going to take care of the baby while he is gone. This is a little scary and exciting at the sametime. LOL We get him for his terrible two's. The wife and I have no kids so this will be new to us.

This will cut down on the poker gig thats for sure. Buts its ok we are honored that he wanted us to do this. He will be gone for atleast 10 months. I am so proud of him. He's a great kid and a good father.

LOL This could also go down as the end of my life as I know it. It will be fun but not the kind of fun I had in mind.

Have been deployed twice now Right Side. If you have a video of his father, that will help. You can also ask him to have a pillow case made at the family support center that will allow the little one to see his dad before bed. If you live next to a base you can also arrange to be able to have access for health care purposes.

GL rightside. Remember there is no "manual". Its a nice thing your doing. All with that comes a lot of responsibility. Best piece of advice I could give you, treat him like he was your son and you'll do fine.

there is a lot of stuff to go over and try to figure out. He is based at Wright-Pat in Ohio. I am in Michigan so will not be close to the base. We need to find a doctor for him. If I have a job by then we need to find a good daycare place. We are going to set his room up with lots of pics of his Dad and Mom.

I worry about the baby being so young and just getting confused of where his Dad went. Not sure what he might remember of his mom she died when he was 5 months.

There might be a guard or reserve base close by and if there is then you can take him there to a doctor. Tri care is pretty decent so an off base place is doable. Also, wife and kids have Skype and that helps big time.

Don't worry about him being confused. He won't even remember.

Says a lot about what your nephew thinks of you. I'm sure you are honored to do this.

good luck TRS......you're gonna need it!

just curious....what happened to his parents....or the wife's parents.....you may be more responsible, but I'd think the chain of command puts you a little further down the list.

Consider yourself lucky, the twos are easy compared to the fours. Enjoy yourself, it will be the most fun youve ever had.

We have a airforce national guard base not so far from us here.

I look forward to it

Nephew's mom has been out of his life for a long long time now. She is useless. She told her family that he died in Iraq the last time he was there. She is dead to him. She gave him up to my brother when he was 6 months old. Dad (my brother) is single and travels 3 weeks out 4 for his job. Her parents are going to be a huge problem. Dad has never liked my Nephew. We see problems in the future with him. He wants that little baby. He has made that clear to everyone.

I see problems with him. He will be told a week before he goes to Kuwait. I am expecting to get surprise visits from social services. I do not put it past this guy.

Have to agree your brother and his ex wife are out of the picture in regards to care for the little guy.

Sounds like the other grandparents should be the ones getting the kid though....they sound like a couple of douches and may not be a better choice, but I think unless there is a reason to say otherwise, I think they would win out in court for temp custody.

You better be really ready for social services and maybe even a few visits from them as well.

I kinda feel for them a little because they lost their daughter and I can see them wanting to recapture some of that from the grandkid...but no way should your brother have to give him up if he isn't deployed.

No thats not how it works. My nephew is the one that gets to decide who watches his child when he deploys. There is no line of custody it is the choice of my nephew.

Her death was tough on everyone. It is the worst thing to happen in my family ever. We will have planned visits with the grandparents.

I am not worried about child services. The house will be done bye then and I will child proof it the best I can.

I'm glad that you have planned trips to the grandparents....I'm sure they will appreciate them.

good luck TRS.....the next 10 months will be quite challenging but hopefully the rewards outweigh the frustration
