if you like German food, Jacob Wirth is the oldest restaurant in Boston - it's located right on the edge of Chinatown, near the Common and theaters.

Here are two great restaurants. They are not right in back bay, but not too far.

La Morra http://www.lamorra.com/

Teatro http://www.teatroboston.com/#/home

La Morra is on route 9 just outside Brookline Village, which is only a few minutes from Back Bay. Teatro is one the edge of the theater district on Tremont street, and probably easier to reach if you have to rely on public transportation like the T. Both are italian more than anything, but excellent.

here are two i liked when i lived there:

http://www.nonamerestaurant.com/

ditto... I go back to the days when there was literally no name on the place and only a few knew about it. We used to sit out in the back room, (nothing but a screened porch only a few feet away from the dock). The fishing boats would come in, unload their lobster traps right there in front of you and you'd be eating lobster straight from the Atlantic. Not sure if that's the same arrangement but I bet their seafood is still second to none.

Harvard Gardens is near MGH, and is quite good.

Is Remington's still open on Boston Common? That place was great.
