Olney adds that "there is optimism a deal will be completed in the next week or two." If that's the case, perhaps it doesn't bother Beckett that the Red Sox are unwilling to give him a five-year deal, similar to the one they gave John Lackey this offseason. Beckett, 30 in May, went 17-6 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 199 strikeouts last year. He posted a 3.72 ERA and a 22/5 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings of Grapefruit League play this spring.
