There's a bunch of people that go out into the Everglades trying to kill all the pythons they see.

People would buy them and set them loose there and now it's cause a big problem with the natural habitat.

They actually have a program. You take some kind of python hunting course and you go into the Everglades and get paid for killing the snakes.

gators belong in Florida, pythons don't !

I thought the cold spell killed a lot of the pythons, boas, cobras, etc. down there ?

Who pays the snake hunters ? Is it like a bounty ?

This is what I thought is that pythons were indigenous to that area. Exotic animals from other countrys such as Africa and India are smuggled in illegally all the time though, it's a big underground business

pythons don't belong in Florida, they are a non-native species. I think indigenous means native ? Tons of animals and plants are here, and don't belong.

ballast water from ships can transfer marine critters, exotic pets released, eco-terrorism, etc.

not much you can do about it, if the new critter can survive in the environment.

There are colonies of wild parakeets in New Haven, Ct, not a huge problem, though.

And they got those whacked out jumping fish from around Asia that have mysteriously made their way into some rivers here

The list of invasive species is huge, and I'd guess it started when man started to travel the oceans long distance.

You've got plants, insects, birds, reptiles, probably micro-organisms, mammals, every sort of life-form imaginable.

Of course we only hear about the stuff invading the US, but I'm sure some US species are a problem in foreign lands, as well.

I know there are tons of plants and insects that are a huge problem, everywhere.

once you get a breeding population established, you're FUCKED !

I think rats came from Europe.

Imagine an insect that could wipe-out the crops on Fishhead's Iowa farms....maybe bio-engineer such a pest, if your goal is to take out the US farming interests.

There are no snakes in Hawaii, release enough boas, etc....they take over, and kill off every native bird, there.

I think all of this accidental, not malicious, so far, but it is huge.

Hawaii is a great example, being so isolated. Imagine the impact of some predator, like a coyote or wolf being introduced....or plant, bug, bird, etc.

How about maybe piranha in a body of fresh water ?

There are fucking big ass sharks that swim hundreds of miles inland upstream in rivers.

I don't really like to venture into natural bodies of water, as a swimmer.

Are there monkees in Florida ?

http://www.nytimes.com/1995/06/06/s...ngles-with-invasive-species.html?pagewanted=1

part of me says this is all survival of the fittest. Homo Sapiens is an animal ( after all) that has evolved, and now moves over long distances, unwittingly moving some other creatures along for the ride.....like a bird ingesting a plant seed, and shitting it out, miles away. So it is somewhat natural, another part of me says mankind is the bad animal, and Earth would be better without people, or at least that there are way too many people.

tough stuff, but you can't eliminate these "new" critters, once they're here.

Who knows maybe the American gray squirrel would fuck up Australia, or something....it has to go both ways....not every invasive creature fucks USA. Some maybe even be helpful ? Maybe soybeans came from Asia or somewhere, and are now a big crop ?

There have been a bunch of shows on Discovery, Sci channel recently about the invasive spieces problems in Florida. The pythons seems to be the biggest problems. Floridas climate is very acclimating for these type of snakes. Problem is getting out of control down there.
