They conquered a so-called curse and created indelible memories during the 2000s, which was easily the most successful decade the Red Sox have had in modern times.

To come up with such a list, ballots were issued to five people who followed the ins and outs of the team as closely as anyone over this memorable portion of the club's history.

The panelists, who were near unanimous in their selections, included NESN play-by-play man Don Orsillo, radio voice Joe Castiglione, team historian Dick Bresciani, director of media relations Pam Ganley and coordinator of baseball information Henry Mahegan.

Keven Millar only played three seasons in Boston clouting 52 homers with 220 RBI and a .282 Ave. in 432 total games. Trot Nixon played 10 years as a Red Sox, 7 during the decade. Damon played only 4 years himself (if you insert Millar as an outfielder one of those two would have to go) but played 597 games and had better numbers everywhere than Millar. Nixon was a mainstay for a decade in Boston playing nearly 1000 games in a Red Sox uniform (972).

Comparing Millar with Kevin Youkilis as the decades first baseman is one sided also as Youk has 6 seasons on the team during the decade, He has played just shy of 500 games at first and a little over 200 at 3rd. and has been an All Star in 2008 and 2009, There is no sense even comparing the offensive numbers.

Bottom line is Kevin Millar had a good year in the World Series year of 2004 playing 150 games at first hitting 18 homers with 74 RBI and a .297 average along with another good year in 2003 (his 1st in Boston) but they were his only two decent years as a Red Sox and a major leaguer to boot. In 2005 (his last in Boston) Millar fell off to 134 games, 9 homers, 50 RBI and a .272 average. He was dealt to Baltimore for the 2006 season.

Manny, Nomar, Big Papi, Veritek, and Lowell are all cinches. Dustin Pedroia cannot be overlooked because of 2007 when he was AL Rookie of the Year, in 2008 he was AL MVP, Gold Glove winner at 2nd and AL starting All Star 2nd baseman. He was an All Star reserve in 2009.

Nomar???

I like him alot and appreciate the fact that he signed the one day contract then retired to end his career here, I have to say that there were better SS's

4 years with the Sox in the decade alone probably seals the deal. in addition he was the batting champ in 2000 /w a .372 average.

Agree, but he could not move to his right and became a cancer to the team. Although they have not been able to keep a good (productive) player in that spot since Nomar, they won 2 Championships and almost a 3rd once he left.

What about Bernie Carbo
Bosox's Bernie Carbo says he was stoned during '75 World Series

By David Brown
ept_sports_mlb_experts-72952656-1270160273.jpg
Most baseball fans know about Carlton Fisk's iconic home run that won Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.
They also might know about Bernie Carbo, who hit a homer that made Fisk's possible.
He's the guy behind the guy.
With the Red Sox four outs from elimination, Carbo kept Boston's hopes alive by stroking a pinch-hit, score-tying, three-run homer into the center-field bleachers at Fenway Park.
Fisk then did his thing in the 12th, waving the ball fair to end one of the greatest World Series games ever played. It sent New England into bedlam — until the Cincinnati Reds came back to win Game 7.
Here's video of Carbo's also-classic homer (and, a little later, Fisk's).
Also not as widely known, Bernie was apparently HIGH AS A KITE when he connected against right-hander Rawly Eastwick. That not-so-little tidbit was revealed in a terrific feature by the Boston Globe's Stan Grossfeld earlier this week. In that feature, Carbo opens up about a moment in his life that should have given him an all-time natural high. Only, thanks to chemicals, he was already there.
From the Boston Globe:
"I probably smoked two joints, drank about three or four beers, got to the ballpark, took some [amphetamines], took a pain pill, drank a cup of coffee, chewed some tobacco, had a cigarette, and got up to the plate and hit,'' Carbo said.
It wasn't a one-time binge, either:
"I played every game high,'' Carbo said. "I was addicted to anything you could possibly be addicted to. I played the outfield sometimes where it looked like the stars were falling from the sky."

Boo for Nomar.

When the teams wins the World Series after you leave and you're called a cancer, I wouldn't put him on the team.

I would have said Gonzalez or even Cabrera. AG played as much as Schilling almost and LENGTH of tenure shouldn't determine anything

I too disagree with Nomar.

Even though he was only there for one year I go with Cabrera

Nomar before injuries was part of the Jeter/A-Rod debate as to who the best ss in AL was. Boston media was brutal to him towards the end as well. Some of the blame lies on Nomar, but he was 1 of the best hitters in game during his healthy stretch for Sox.

I don't know when it happened but Nomar's defense was really hurting that team

Defense didn't start falling apart until the achilles and back problems started in 2004. Before that defense was very good and he had an OPS of .917 in 473 games for the decade. Gonzalez had an OPS of .717 in 155 games, Cabrera played in 58 regular season games.

If a few hits in the playoffs make up that much difference, Jon Lester easily makes the team over Wakefield, 2.57 postseason ERA compared to 6.56

Nomar's problems were because of greed. He turned down 60 MIllion for 4 years, could have retired a red sox and gone into the hall of fame and be one of the most beloved players ever in Boston, but it wasn't enough. The steroids put too much muscle on his body, more than it could handle, and he broke down. His bat speed was gone because he took the roids to make more money. He was a natural, and pissed it away. Does Rich Gedman regret not signing...how about Jody Reed. Idiots listening to agents and not seeing the big picture. Fuck Nomar.

There is no way half of those players should be there before Jim Rice.

TRUE Rice did not ground into one double play play from 2000- 2009 amazing player!!!!

If anyone remembers the incredible catch Jeter made diving into the stands ... it's worth noting that during that game Nomar REFUSED to go in and pinch hit because he didn't start.

As for comparing Nomars offensive stats to AG's, AG wasn't in there to hit. AG could turn double plays on balls that Nomar couldn't even get to.

I like AG the most, out of the SS the Sox had over that decade - BUT I can't see having a guy on the all-decade team that only started 155 games.
