When you bet using a book, you are betting against them. They set the lines and keep the vig. That is how they make their money.

In a betting exchange you bet directly against other people.

Here's an explanation from betfair, which is another betting exchange.

Everyone says matchbook and the exchanges are a must have for wagering especially in baseball and to some extent they are right. The only problem is these exchanges come and go and their survival depends on volume and liquidity, how many players and what volume of wagering they are getting to determines their outlook basically.

I have been burned by a few exchanges in getting my money and even have had major problems at wsex and to a much smaller degree, matchbook, two of the largest ones available to Americans. Research the health and financial shape of the the exchanges before you put any sizable amounts in and especially if you like weekly payouts you may be better off sticking with a good book with overnight lines, nickel and dime lines, 5 inning and second half lines, etc..

betjam pays the fastest by far ,5dimes is great, tons of books out there but having an exchange for an out is a must ,just not for playing with large sums of money in my opinion.

Betfair

Totally agree with you about the trust thing with Matchbook...I would NOT and DO NOT keep much money in there.

Luckily, Betfair is solid. No risk in losing your money ever...

Another thing with the bookies is they will close your account or seriously limit you if you start to beat them. Betfair want you to win...

That is all fine and dandy about Betfair, but from what I can see they are not allowed in the US so what good does that do to the vast majority of people who use this the rx???@)

5Dimes is a far better book for Baseball than Betjam

Matchbook may be the best sports exchange you can find if you are in the US

So why are you shilling for Betfair when you can not even use them?

Just curious as to why you are telling a guy from Tampa Bay to check out your website when he can not even use it? Are you planning on taking US customers soon?

The whole betting against someone else and not a book supported by a bank is what makes me nervous. How can you be confident in thinking you'll get paid?

Same thing as how can you be confident that the Sportsbook won't go belly up as well or just flat out not pay you. There is risk no matter which way you go

Hey Vega -not shilling...we are a paid advertiser on the RX and last time I checked there were a few Canucks on here and also some others who CAN use Betfair. It's good for Americans to know what's going on in the gambling world as well...even if you cant participate. (It's a gambling forum after all)

As far as taking americans, thats up to US lawmakers to decide.

Here's a Flash demo link to how Betfair can be used to bet for, bet against, trade for a profit, set your own odds, etc (Betfair is the world's largest exchange but of course there are others...hope this helps)

Thanks,

If you would read correctly I stated that you were responding to a guys question (the one who STARTED this thread) who is for Tampa Bay (which when I last checked is in the US). So start your own thread to advertise for Betfair instead of using someones thread that can not use your service

Secondly, if you would read what was written, I NEVER stated that you were shilling. I stated that KING OF NICOTINE was shilling.

I am half Canadian (on my Mothers side) and have acouple of relatives that use your service in Canada so I am quite familiar with your site so I was not attacking you directly in any way.

My frustration was the fact that you are coming in a guys thread who, at present, can not use your service in any way shape or form.:smoking:

In that respect, matchbook works like all other sportsbooks. You can only place or accept offers with money you have in your account and cannot withdraw what you have currently at risk, and the same is true for the other person.
So there is no chance that the person you are betting against will fail to pay you. Actually you won't even know who you are betting against, you only see the available bets.
The only risk is that Matchbook itself might run into liquidity trouble and fail to pay out the funds they have custody of, but so far they seem solid.
