Spirit Airlines to charge up to $45 for carry-ons

Bigger airlines watching low-cost carrier’s move to see if customers will pay

MINNEAPOLIS - Spirit Airlines will charge as much as $45 each way for a carry-on bag, adding a fee that bigger airlines have yet to try.

The charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free. Spirit said it will add measuring devices at the gates to determine which carry-ons are free and which ones will incur the charge.

The new charge is $45 if paid at the gate, and $30 if paid in advance, and begins Aug. 1. Spirit said on Tuesday that it reduced its lowest fares by $40 on average, so most customers won't really pay more to fly.

Spirit also charges to check luggage.

Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza said having fewer carry-on bags will help empty the plane faster. He said the idea is to get customers to pay for individual things they want, while keeping the base fare low.

"The beauty of it is they will do what they think is best for them and will now have the choice" he said.

Spirit is based in Miramar, Fla., and most of its routes run through Fort Lauderdale

to Latin America.

Even though it's a minor player, bigger airlines are likely to watch to see whether customers are willing to pay for carry-ons. None of the major carriers made any immediate changes to their fees on Tuesday morning.

Fees for checking bags on the big U.S. carriers got started in 2008. At first, many travelers thought they wouldn't last. But now all the big airlines except Southwest and JetBlue charge to check a bag on domestic flights.

I fly Allegiant and they charge $35. $70 for 1 piece round trip isn't near as enticing. I have a couple of free vouchers for SW that need to be used anyways.

These fees are getting crazy.

Maybe they should put Goodwill stores at airports....buy some junk clothes upon arrival, toss them after a wearing, come home with a bag big enough for your toothbrush.

And the problem is people - me included, sadly - won't do or say shit. We'll fly Spirit if that is the chepest flight after baggage fees and simply grumble to the clerk at the counter ... as if that will help.

I will send them an email (even though I never fly them) but what good is that going to do?

I draw the line at charging for a carry-on bag !

Here's an idea !.....

design some suitcase in the form of a big fat fucking guy....buy a seat for it, strap it into the seat next to you. Now your $99 flight to Miami , gets you 5 + suitcases worth of cargo, eh ?

I may be alone but I think it is a great idea in theory.....but people are too fucking stupid to make this work.....so it is a bad idea.

Remember back in the old days you buy a computer and you had 15 different internet providers with free trials, some shitty version of microsoft works, a program that is for 3 year old kids which you have none of, and 20 other software programs that took you an hour to remove?

Then Dell came along and gave us cheaper computers without all that shit we don't need anyways. (not gonna talk about Dell's quality in today's market....save that for later)

Spirit is doing the same thing (in theory) and people can pick and choose what they want....but people will not see it for what it is......the smarter thing is to charge a fare and have an option which lowers the fare by $30 if you dont' want to carry on a bag (and make it $45 when they change their mind at the gate).

these things have not affected me yet, as i log about 30k miles a yr on continental, but these changes do find a way to trickle up

continental just changed ceo's and the new guy jeff smisek is an ultra bean counter -- so even the frequent flyers will be nickled and dimed in the coming months

i used to look at southwest as the "Golden Coral" of the airlines -- but i must give them credit, they have resisted this wave of b.s. that the airlines have been pushing -- they will get more and more biz and i am happy for them. everyday it seems there is some new wrinkle from an airline --it's like they have a grand prize each wk for the newest "how retarded can we go on fees"

i am all for capitalism and for airlines to do what they have to but this $hit is really getting ridiculous -- next the flight attendants will have the old coin belts with the coin despener for feeding the bathrooms or reclining chairs quarters for use --

and the spirit ceo's b.s. line of bring less, pay less is complete b.s.

it should be bring less pay our current prices, bring anything onboard you will now pay more

yeah right, thanks for "saving" me squat -- there are no true savings in that new plan

I may be alone but I think it is a great idea in theory.....but people are too fucking stupid to make this work.....so it is a bad idea.

this is actually the best way, if it was the true regular fare with no monkey biz, then give discounts for not using services or carrying on bags -- a true incentive based fare that rewards those that use less "services" or "cost" the carrier less -- but no shot of that kind of pricing that is legit (meaning no discounting a rate after they jack it up 150%)

Why Charge for a Carry on in the First Place ?? What "Service" am I Using that will cost the Airline Money ??

NOTHING !! They just see this as some People Only travel with a Carry on, and they are Losing Money !

This Whole thing is BS...

I read about How the Airlines made like $100's of Millions of dollors since Charging for Checking in Baggage.
And they Still fucking Cry !

Once airlines started charging for bags, whats the difference between them charging for bags in the bottom or top of the plane? The flood gates opened once they started charging for bags. The natural progression was to start charging for carry ons. Hell, they charge for pillows.

I know, it sucks being charged for bags period. But like banks and other businesses they are looking to make additional profit. Many companies are nickel and diming people more and more.

Why do the Yankees charge 200 dollars for a ticket, 10 dollars for a beer and 50 dollars to park.....because they can.

I guess the next thing for obama to do is to socialize the airlines.

We have the right to healthcare.

why not have the right to travel by air?

when is it wrong to make money in the USA? If the airline wants to charge me $150 for a seat and another $50 for a bag, and $5 for a drink that's wrong?

WE ARE FREAKING AMERICANS, WE DON'T NEED HANDOUTS.
WE DO NOT EXPECT GOODS AND SERVICES FOR FREE.

I fly Southwest whenever possible. By far my favorite airline. It took a long time for me to even try southwest because of the no assigned seats, cheap discount carrier stigma. Then after I flew them a few years ago I was pissed I hadn't used them sooner. Not having assigned seats didn't bother me at all. The pilots and crew are usually friendly and funny, not up tight like other airlines. This is all before even getting to the "no bagage fees" advantage.

they say, the reason why they started to Charge for checking in Baggage is because they are Handling the baggage.

Your Carry On...is Just That...YOU are carring it on. Nobody from the Airline is carrying Your Bag !!

And Yes, they charge for Pillows, Blankets, etc...You are Paying for an "Item" I can Deal with That Nickel & Dime....Won't Pay for something that They are NOT giving me.
