Is it that it's shrouded in secrecy and special exclusiveness and hosts a tour called the Masters? Is it the mystique?

I would rather play at the Disney Golf course with the mickey mouse ear sand trap. OK I'm kidding but I don't see how this place has anything on Pebble Beach. I mean scenery, hello! You are in a forest surounded by creepy people wearing green jackets and walk around thinking they are the Apostles or something.

I mean really it's a lot of forest and some ponds. What is so great about it?!

I went and it is the most beautiful place on earth... the layout is amazing and the course is always perfect. The scenery at pebble is better, but like most of the Pacific courses, the layout is average at best. They are mediocre courses to play.

blows pebble away...

pebble beach only has about 6 holes that have any kind of scenery.

if you were to ever walk the grounds at augusta ( like i have ) , you would think you died and went to heaven...

especially if you are a golfer..

The place is as nice as any course I have been on. The conditions are so far above any other course and they spend so much money in there grounds budget to keep it that way. It is hard to understand unless you have been there or are in the Golf Buisness

special exclusiveness for sure, a course carved out of the forest, is neat, never seen it but it has to be amazing scenery. But as a true golfer I have to say the history, the footsteps of legends, the battles that took place between the greats of different generations, oh and the uncreepy people wearing green jackets.

Pebble Beach has its own place in history as well and I think both are great courses. I would love to play both and if I had to choose, flip a coin you can't go wrong.

Been there, It's the history IMO and all the legends of the game that come back time and time again.....(a unique playing field, yearly with some old timers and legends in the mix...)

Any of us can play Pebble Beach. Will set you back a few hundred but you can play it.

You or I are not going to play Augusta, even for thousands. Golf is a sport that likes tradition with aristocratic flair.

people talk about pebble and its scenery, but as far as the actual look of the golf course and ocean scenery, pebble doesnt have shit on Kiawah Island imo. and for a lot of the year, pebble looks exactly like what it is...a public course. no place on earth is as pure as Augusta...it simply takes going there to grasp the full concept. i see something different every single year. the grass and flowers are so meticulously manicured its crazy. you will never find a dead spot unless something drastic just happened and you wont find limbs and other shit laying around... leaving tonight, cant wait to see the new practice facilities

The place is immaculate. Even the grass the fans walk on is perfectly manicured. Each pine tree has a lightning rod grounding it. Everything is green, even the garbage bags and the garbage bag holders. I couldn't believe how inexpensive the concession prices were: a beer was $2 in 2006. No advertising signage anywhere. It is like stepping into a different world.

Guys those are all great posts. I appreciate the responses. I believe I posted in haste and should have asked the question without being so judgmental.

I learned some things here though, and that's what matters.

Thanks

I guess it is a combination of the ambiance, the history and the aristocratic flair. When you top it all off with the immemaculate grounds it is just a place that really captivates a sports fan. You can only imagine standing of the Tee Box of number 12 and trying to zero in on what club to hit. Which way the wind is swirling and should you play to the fat part of the green or go for the pin. Each sport has their epitome of greatest, Daytona and Indy in Racing, Yankee Stadium, in more modern time, The New Texas Stadium. Augusta just enchants sports fans plain and simple.

News 12 This Morning / April 7, 2014

Augusta, Ga. (WRDW) -- If you're heading to Augusta National for a little golf this week, you'll need to make sure you bring a few things, and leave a few others at home.

Many patrons want to capture that memorable moment walking on the serene green fairways or snapping a picture of that famous golfer, but you're limited. Patrons are only allowed to bring cameras Monday through Wednesday (practice rounds) and after that, cameras are prohibited.

Throughout the entire week, cellphones are not allowed onto the course along with any form of radio, TV, or pager.

Other prohibited items include:

•Bags, Backpacks, Packages
*No purses larger than 10"W x 10"H x 12"D
•Weapons of any kind (regardless of permit)
•Alcoholic beverages
•Beverage containers/Coolers
•Flags/Banners/Signs
•Folding armchairs or stools
•Strollers

With the chance of rain today, many patrons will be carrying umbrellas to the course. Those are allowed but be ready for a little longer wait to get into the gates because of added security measures.

As for what you can take out of Augusta National, that list is a little more lenient.

From souvenirs to photos during practice rounds, nothing compares to the memories of being on the world's biggest golf stage.

A Pimento cheese sandwich might cost you a buck fifty, and a seamless Masters hat might run you about 20 dollars but the memories, well...those are priceless.

Played Kiawah last Sept, it is a great golf course, last few holes coming up the beach is great, playing Pebble in 3 weeks, its still a bucket list if your a golf fan, especially Bing and Bob, played Bandon/Pacific Dunes, also the "secret course" there, i can t imagine Pebble be anymore scenic than those, Whistling Straits i felt like i was across the pond for 3 days, great place also. BUT Augusta would be a top play for anyone that loves golf. It is amazing walking those grounds

I would think the title of another thread pretty much sums it up what makes Augusta great. " A Tradition Unlike Any Other". Not enough space in this forum to explains all the history. That's what forever separates Augusta from all the other courses.

Not to compare it to Augusta or Pebble (although I feel there are some real similarities outside of history).... I had the pleasure to play Shadow Creek many times "back in the day". I mean when you could play eighteen holes or more and never see another person besides your caddy or a player you had taken with you. The course was positively pristine in every detail and the design and beauty made it nearly impossible to recall that you were in the desert. Goes to show what can be accomplished when money is absolutely no object! As many people know, Steve Wynn had taken the Jurassic Park approach.... "Spare no expense". There is something to be said about the mystique of a place that is so difficult to get access too.

Just making the comparison that money can buy most anything.... but not history and tradition.
