The D-backs won six of seven from the Pirates a year ago, and figure to be much improved from their disappointing 72-90 record in 2009. The first five hitters in the Arizona lineup (Jackson, Drew, Upton, LaRoche and Reynolds) should pose problems for Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton, who struggled this spring, allowing six home runs in 24 innings.
Morton's mound opponent, Rodrigo Lopez, was sharp in 22 innings this spring, yielding only one home run, striking out 16 and walking only four.
The Pirates showed their true colors yesterday. After winning the first two games of the season, Pittsburgh reverted to form by allowing the Dodger back-ups (Torre sat five regulars) to score 10 runs on 16 hits. The Pirates did not help matters by committing three errors.
Pittsburgh is 3-10 the last four seasons at Chase Field.
