Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox (-125, 8.5)

The old Ozzie Guillen probably would have already blown a fuse following the team's slow start to the season, but this may be the kinder, gentler version of the White Sox manager.

The ChiSox have struggled at the plate during the the first week of the season, scoring just 10 runs during a current four-game losing streak, including a pair of 11-inning losses to the Twins and the Tigers.

"Our bats are very cold," Guillen told the Chicago Tribune. "No bats in the lineup are swinging well. It's tough when four guys don't have an average yet. ... I have to be patient now because if (I'm not), it will be a long season."

Patience and pitching should pay off for the ChiSox today. White Sox pitchers have posted a sub 3.00 ERA and have struck out 48 batters in their first five games.

Workhorse Mark Buerhle (1-0) gets the ball for Guillen's troops today in hopes of stopping the losing skid.

Pick: White Sox

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-135, 9)

The Yankees finally appear to have gotten their bats going Saturday against the Devil Rays.

And today, they face a pitcher they've feasted on in the past.

Tampa will go with ace James Shields, who has struggled mightily against the Yanks. Shields has just a 1-7 career mark against the Bombers, and sports a 6.00 ERA in nine appearances.

N.Y. turns to A.J. Burnett, who is 11-4 all-time against the Rays, including a 2.77 ERA in 21 games.

Pick: Yankees

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Brewers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-131)

Series

The Cardinals and Brewers opened up their three-game set at Miller Park in dramatic fashion on Friday. With St. Louis trailing 4-3 in the ninth inning, Nick Stavinoha hit a two-run blast off Milwaukee closer Trevor Hoffman, lifting the Cardinals to a 5-4 win and handing Hoffman his first blown save of 2009.

St. Louis crushed the Brewers 7-1 Saturday. The Cardinals got a big day at the plate from catcher Yadier Molina, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI including a two-run home run. Albert Pujols finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI, giving him six on the season.

The Cardinals and Brewers split their 18 meetings last year, with the Cardinals winning seven of nine at Miller Park. The Brewers closed out their 2009 regular season with a three-game sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis, a series in which the two teams combined to score 43 runs.

For the year, the teams averaged a combined 8.3 runs per game when facing each other. They have played under in both games this season.

Pen pals

Hoffman’s hiccup notwithstanding, the bullpen has been a strong point for Milwaukee over the first week of the season, with setup men LaTroy Hawkins and Todd Coffey leading the way.

Going into Saturday’s game, Hawkins and Coffey had combined for six shutout innings, over which they allowed only one hit between them. Claudio Vargas allowed one run in relief Saturday after a rough outing from starter Yovani Gallardo.

Carp is sharp

The Cardinals will send Chris Carpenter to the mound Sunday night for his second start of the season. He allowed two runs in six innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day Monday.

In 2009, Carpenter pitched brilliantly against Milwaukee, going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his three starts against the Brewers. He pitched especially well at Miller Park, allowing just three hits over 17 innings without yielding a single run.

Milwaukee will counter with newly acquired lefty Randy Wolf, who opened his season with a win over Colorado Tuesday night. In his only 2009 start against the Cardinals, Wolf took the loss, allowing two earned runs over six innings of work. For his career, Wolf is 3-5 against St. Louis with a respectable 3.64 ERA.

Listen to your Hart

It will be interesting to see who gets the start in right field for Milwaukee Sunday. Corey Hart was named the starter coming into the regular season, despite a terrible showing in spring training, but Jim Edmonds has started three of Milwaukee’s first five games in right field.

Brewers manager Ken Macha insists that he went with Edmonds based on the matchups and that there is no platoon, but the situation bears watching. It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Macha goes with the left-handed Edmonds against Carpenter, a righty.

Hart was the Brew Crew’s lone offense in Saturday’s loss. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He’s hitting .286 BA to start the year.

What’s in the Cards?

The St. Louis bullpen struggled mightily in their season-opening series in Cincinnati, posting a 7.11 ERA in three games, but rebounded nicely against the Brewers on Friday with three scoreless innings.

Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte came in for three innings in relief of starter Jaime Garcia Saturday. The two did not allow a hit and had just one walk while striking out two batters.

Holliday cheer

Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday has feasted on Milwaukee pitchers over his career, batting .413 with a lifetime 1.193 OPS, heading into Saturday’s game. Holliday is off to a torrid start this season, batting .474 through Friday’s games. He was 2-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday’s victory.

Reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols is homerless since going yard twice on Opening Day.

Weather

Sunday’s forecast calls for temperatures around 50 degrees with little wind and no precipitation. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 11 in Baseball History...

1912 - Rube Marquard of the New York Giants began a 19-game winning streak with an 18-3 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1917 - Babe Ruth beats the Yankees, pitching a three-hit, 10-3 win for the Red Sox in the opener. He is on the way to a 24-13 record and a league-leading 35 complete games in his best year as a pitcher.
1954 - To make room for promising rookie outfielder Wally Moon, the Cardinals trade longtime great Enos Slaughter to the Yankees. In what turns out to be a good deal for both teams, the Cardinals get center fielder Bill Virdon, pitcher Mel Wright, and outfielder Emil Tellinger in return. Virdon will become the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 1955, and Slaughter will help the Yankees win 103 games.

1959 - Don Drysdale hits his second Opening Day home run to become the first pitcher with two career home runs on Opening Day. Unfortunately, his home run is the only Dodgers score as he loses to the Cubs 6-1.

1961 - The Los Angeles Angels won their first major league game, 7-2 over the Orioles in Baltimore. Ted Kluszewski had two homers for the Angels.

1962 - The New York Mets played their first game and lost 11-4 to the Cardinals in St. Louis.

1963 - Warren Spahn's Opening Day 6-1 victory over the Mets is the 328th win of his career. He thus moves ahead of Eddie Plank as the all-time winningest left-hander. Except for Duke Snider's home run, no Mets get past second base.

1966 - A crowd of 44,468, including Vice President Hubert Humphrey, attends a historic opener at Washington. Emmett Ashford becomes the major league's first black umpire in Cleveland's 5-2 win against the Senators.

1969 - The Seattle Pilots played their first game, with Gary Bell shutting out the White Sox 7-0 at Sicks Stadium.

1975 - In Milwaukee, 48,160 fans brave 37-degree weather to welcome home Hank Aaron. Hank drives in a run as the Brewers whip the Indians 6-2.

1981 - After 15 seasons with the Dodgers, Don Sutton makes his debut with the Astros and is pounded by his former club for six runs in four innings. Los Angeles wins 7-4.

1985 - Seattle's Gorman Thomas hit three homers and drove in six runs to lead the Mariners to a 14-6 victory over the Oakland A's.

1990 - California's Mark Langston and Mike Witt combine to no-hit the Mariners 1-0 for the first combined no-hitter in the major leagues since 1976. It is Langston's first start for the Angels since signing as a free agent in the off-season.

1991 - Junior Ortiz guns down Rickey Henderson, who is trying to break Lou Brock's all-time stolen base record. Henderson later leaves the game with a calf injury.

1996 - Greg Maddux loses his first road game since June 27, 1994 in Montreal. Atlanta's 2-1 loss in San Diego ends a string that saw Maddux go 18-0 with only 17 earned runs allowed in 154.2 innings.

Late Sunday Tips

The first full Sunday card in baseball is filled with plenty of solid pitchers taking the mound including Roy Halladay, A.J. Burnett, Johan Santana, and Justin Verlander during the day. Later on, several key matchups take center-stage including a pair of contests out west. Also, we'll take a look at the ESPN Sunday Night showdown between the Cardinals and Brewers. Let's start in Anaheim as the A's try to stay hot with their series finale against the Angels.

Athletics at Angels - 3:35 PM EST

The Halos have started slow out of the gate after dropping four of their first six games, wrapping up things with the A's. Oakland's offense has picked up recently by tallying 25 runs in the last four games. Los Angeles ended a four-game skid on Saturday thanks to a Hideki Matsui walk-off single to beat Oakland, 4-3.

Joe Saunders looks to bounce back from a poor debut to the season, allowing 5 ER in 5 innings of a 5-3 loss to Minnesota. The Twins went deep on Saunders three times, equaling the amount of homers the southpaw gave up in his final six starts of last season. Saunders has had success against Oakland with four wins in five outings in 2009, allowing 2 ER or less in each victory.

The A's counter with Dallas Braden, who is coming off one of the best starts of his career. The lefty scattered four hits and one run in seven innings of work as Oakland edged Seattle, 2-1 in ten innings. Braden's luck hasn't been there against the Angels with Oakland going 1-4 in his five lifetime starts versus Los Angeles. All five of those games have finished 'under' the total with the A's crossing the plate just nine times.

The Angels are listed as a $1.30 favorite, while the total is set at 9 (Bet $1.20 to win $1.00 on the 'under'). The A's are 0-5 the last five on the road against left-handed starters, while the Angels have won five straight series finales against Oakland.

Braves at Giants - 4:05 PM EST

San Francisco has been impressive out of the gate as they send out reigning Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum to the mound against Atlanta. The Braves have struggled against the Giants' ace, as Kenshin Kawakami tries to slow down San Francisco's offense.

Lincecum has beaten the Braves in five of six career starts, including a home shutout of Atlanta last May by a 4-0 count. The Braves got revenge on Lincecum with a 4-2 victory last July at Turner Field as the righty lasted only five innings. Each outing against the Braves has seen low-scoring affairs with five 'unders' getting cashed. Lincecum didn't suffer a Cy Young hangover with a 5-2 win at Houston in the season opener, allowing four hits in seven scoreless innings.

Kawakami hasn't made a start since last August as the Braves' righty finished last season at 7-12 with an ERA of 3.86. Atlanta won seven of Kawakami's 13 road starts, but fell as an away favorite at AT&T Park last May, 6-3. The Giants figured out the 34-year old twice last season as underdogs, including a 5-1 road victory in late July as $1.60 'dogs.

The Braves were a perfect 3-0 last season as road underdogs of $1.60 or higher, while the Giants are 6-1 the last seven starts Lincecum has made as a home favorite of at least $2.00. San Francisco opened up as a $2.00 'chalk,' with the total set at 7.

Cardinals at Brewers - 8:05 PM EST

Milwaukee tries to avoid the sweep at home as the Brewers face former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals. The Redbirds rallied off Trevor Hoffman in Friday's 5-4 victory, followed up by a 7-1 blowout on Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers send Randy Wolf to the hill to stop the bleeding. The veteran lefty picked up a victory in his Milwaukee debut with a 7-5 triumph over Colorado. Wolf gave up nine hits and 4 ER in 6.2 innings while striking out eight. The ex-Dodger lasted just under four innings in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Cardinals last season, but L.A. managed a 5-3 win. The losing pitcher in that game was Carpenter, just the third loss in the last 11 road starts for the Cardinals when the righty takes the mound on the highway.

Carpenter looked outstanding in his season debut by scattering five hits and 2 ER in six innings of work in an 11-6 win at Cincinnati. The St. Louis ace has dominated Milwaukee, allowing 11 hits and 3 ER in three starts last season. The Cardinals won two of the three outings, with the lone loss coming in a 1-0 setback at Miller Park last May (8 IP, 2 hits, and 10 K's).

The Cardinals are listed as a $1.40 road favorites with the total set at 7 ½. St. Louis has struggled in the third game of a series dating back to last season, going 1-8, including Thursday's walk-off loss at Cincinnati. On the flip side, the Brewers are a solid 7-1 in the third game of a series the last eight opportunities.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers: With home-court advantage secured through the playoffs, the Cavs are considering rest LeBron James.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers: With the top seed in the West secured, the Lakers may rest Kobe Bryant (finger).

Minnesota Timberwolves at New Orleans Hornets: T-wolves center Al Jefferson (personal) is questionable.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Golden State Warriors: Thunder center Nenad Krstic (knee) and Warriors guard Monta Ellis (flu) are doubtful.

Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals: Capitals defenseman Milan Jurcina (hernia) is questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

Chicago Bulls at Toronto Raptors: The Bulls opened as 1-point picks over the Raptors and leaped to 2.5-point favorites at most shops.

Miami Heat at New York Knicks: The Heat opened as 4.5-point favorites and quickly jumped to 5-point picks at some books.

Who's hot

The Raptors have won five in a row over the Bulls by an average margin of 13 points per game.

Miami Heat are 9-1 SU in their last 10.

Orlando Magic are 6-1 SU in their last seven.

Chicago Blackhawks have won six in a row.

Washington Capitals have won five in a row.

Who's not

Minnesota Timberwolves are 1-20 SU in their last 21.

New Orleans Hornets are 1-7 SU in their last eight.

Houston Astros were MLB's only winless team (0-4) entering Saturday night's game.

Key stat

6 inches - The distance Phil Mickelson came from making his third consecutive eagle on Saturday, which would have been a first at the Masters.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Golden State guard Monta Ellis will likely miss his seventh straight game with the flu and the Warriors have managed to win some without his 25.8 points per game in the lineup. However, the Warriors will have a hard time hanging with the streaking Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook without their best guard in the game. The Thunder should be able to run and shoot at will.

Game of the day

Cardinals at Brewers

Notable quotable

"There's a long way to go. It's only Saturday."

Tiger Woods, showing the confidence he's gained from past Masters' comebacks, said heading into Sunday's final round with a four-stroke deficit to Lee Westwood.

Tips and notes

If Dwyane Wade really is "Michael Jackson playing with a bunch of Titos," as Charles Barkley suggests, then at least one Tito has worked his way up to Janet status. Mario Chalmers has become Wade's primary replacement, a much-needed sub as the Heat get ready for the playoffs. Chalmers has picked up his scoring, assists and minutes during the Heat's 9-1 SU run and should continue to do so as the postseason approaches.

The Raptors and Bulls are battling for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and all signs seem to point to Toronto, which has won five straight over Chicago. But today's game has a few big differences: Toronto's Chris Bosh is out this time, Chicago's Joakim Noah is back in the lineup and red hot late in the year, and the Raptors are playing at home, which has been bad news for Toronto (2-11 ATS in their last 13 at home).

The Penguins appear ready to rest goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury for today's game against the New York Islanders to get him ready for the playoffs, but that leaves the Pens thin with backup options between the pipes. While Fleury is 37-20-4-2 on the season, the other three netminders are a combined 9-7-1-0, not exactly bringing confidence in the reserves. Look for the Islanders to have a big scoring day no matter who the Pens put between the pipes.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [TBS | 1:40 PM ET]

Yankees: New York is coming off a game where they were 4 outs from a no hitter, as they dominated the Rays 10-0. A.J. Burnett will try to follow up with a performance similar to what C.C. Sabathia showed yesterday. If anyone can follow up with a scintillating start against the Rays, it's Burnett. Burnett went 4-0 with a 1.97 ERA in 5 starts against the Rays last year. Also, Burnett is 5-2 with a 2.05 lifetime ERA in 10 career outings at Tropicana Field, including 2 complete games. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano have tasted success against James Shields, with each batter better than .400 lifetime against Shields. The Yankees are an impressive 9-2 against the American League East with Burnett on the mound. The Yankees are also 4-0 in games Burnett starts with a total between 9 and 10.5 of late.

Yankees are 42-17 last 59 vs. American League East.
Over is 6-0 last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Rays (-120, O/U 9): Tampa Bay is certainly going to have to improve their offense if they are going to be successful this season. Only once this season have the Rays scored more than 4 runs. The Rays bats have been relatively quiet to start the season, and those same bats were downright dismal yesterday as they didn't score a single run. Tampa Bay will need to be on point offensively today, as James Shields hasn't fared very well against the Yankees. Shields is 1-7 with an ERA of 6 lifetime against the Yankees. Tampa Bay has won their past 3 home games started by Shields. The Rays are also 5-2 in their last 7 games as the listed favorite started by Shields. The Rays go on the road for the 1st time this season after concluding their game today.
.

Rays are 12-3 last 15 vs. American League East.
Under is 7-1 last 8 games as a home favorite.

Key Injuries - RF Matthew Joyce (elbow) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Cardinals (-150, O/U 7.5): Anytime Chris Carpenter takes the mound for St. Louis, they are expected to win. Carpenter has been absolutely dominant for quite some time now, as he's easily one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Carpenter was 17-4 with a 2.24 ERA last year in placing 2nd in the Cy Young voting for the National League. Carpenter hasn't allowed an earned run in his past 17 innings in Milwaukee. St. Louis is already off to a hot start this season, as they are 4-1 this year. The Cardinals have high expectations this year, as they are on the short list of World Series hopefuls. Offensively, the Cardinals start and end with 1B Albert Pujols. Pujols is the most feared batter in the game, and this year is no different. Pujols already has 2 home runs this season while hitting .333. LF Matt Holiday has been even hotter than Pujols, as he also has 2 HR's while batting an impressive .471% this year. The Cardinals are 6-2 in Carpenter's last 8 road starts as the listed favorite.

Cardinals are 16-7 last 23 games as a road favorite.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games as a road favorite.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Brewers: Revenge will be front and center on all of the Brewers minds, as they've lost their past 6 home games against St. Louis. The Brewers lost 1-7 yesterday to the Cardinals, to drop their season long record below .500% at 2-3. Milwaukee has been outscored 12 to 5 during this series, mostly due to their anemic offense. The Brewers are only hitting .177 during this series and only .238 for the entire season. The once feared Brewers lineup has been far from that so far this year. Randy Wolf will take the mound trying to reverse some of the mojo favoring the Cardinals. Wolf hasn't beaten the Cardinals since 2007, so he will have his work cut out for him. Wolf won his 1st start this season, but was far from dominant. Wolf has a 5.40 ERA so far this season, and will clearly need to be better to earn his 2nd win in as many starts. The Brewers are 0-5 in their last 5 games as a home underdog of +110 to +150.

Brewers are 22-6 last 28 home games vs. a team with a road winning % greater than .600.
Over is 6-1 last 7 games a home underdog of +110 to +150.

Key Injuries - 3B Matt Gamel (shoulder) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Sunday Night Baseball Central Showdown

The St. Louis Cardinals are again off to a strong start. Based on Chris Carpenter’s recent outings at Miller Park, that could continue through Sunday night. Carpenter will try to add to his 17-inning scoreless streak in Milwaukee and help the Cardinals to their seventh consecutive road win over the Brewers.

St. Louis opened last season by winning eight of its first 11 en route to a Central Division title. In 2008, the Cardinals got off to an 11-4 start before eventually finishing fourth. A 7-1 victory the Brewers on Saturday was the Cardinals’ fourth in five games to open 2010.

St. Louis, batting only .238 this season, had eight hits in the win but benefited from a pair of timely ones - Yadier Molina’s three-run homer in the second inning and Albert Pujols’ two-run single in the fifth, which moved the Cardinals to 20-8 in April the last couple of years.

The Cardinals took Friday’s series opener 5-4 thanks to two-out, two-run homers from Matt Holliday and pinch-hitter Nick Stavinoha, who drove in the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning. Those victories have paved the way for Carpenter (1-0, 3.00 ERA) to try to help the Cardinals complete consecutive three-game sweeps at Miller Park. The right-hander is 40-22 in road games in the first half of the season in his career. (Team's Record)

“It’s very important to win the series and tomorrow we have a chance to sweep them,” Molina said. “We have Carp on the mound and everybody knows Carp, he’s a great pitcher.”

Carpenter opened this season by allowing two runs and five hits over six innings in Monday’s 11-6 win in Cincinnati. In his previous start in Milwaukee on Sept. 7, he recorded his only shutout of last season—a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory. The righty was 17-4 with a 2.24 ERA last year, and finished second in the NL Cy Young Award voting to San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum.

Carpenter is 25-5 with the Cards on five days rest and also beat the Brewers in St. Louis on Sept. 2, but did not get a decision in Milwaukee on May 25 despite allowing two hits over eight innings. Instead, a two-out single from Bill Hall in the 10th gave the Brewers a 1-0 victory.

Since then, Milwaukee (2-3) has dropped nine of 10 at home to the Cardinals. The Brewers have been outscored 12-5 in the first two games of this series and have batted .177 and they are 0-8 revenging a home loss vs. opponent of six runs or more.

Milwaukee, also hitting .238 overall, will likely need to give left-hander Randy Wolf (1-0, 5.40) a little more support. The Brewers had four hits Saturday including two from Corey Hart in his second start this season.
“That was very encouraging,” manager Ken Macha told the team’s Web site. “I was looking at how the thing go the next three or four games, and he’s got a chance he’s going to be in there (Sunday).”

Wolf, 0-2 with a 3.57 ERA in his last three starts versus the Cardinals, allowed two runs over six innings in his only outing against them last season for the Los Angeles Dodgers but was outdueled by Carpenter in a 6-1 defeat on July 27, however he’s 24-6 pitching at home in a night game the last three seasons. (Team’s record)

Wolf, who hasn’t earned a win over St. Louis since May 16, 2007, got five runs of support in his Brewers debut - Tuesday’s 7-5 win over visiting Colorado. He allowed four runs and nine hits over 6 2-3 innings, but also struck out eight and walked none.

Sportsbook.com has St. Louis as -146 money line favorites with total Ov7.5 and they are 29-7 vs. teams outscored by 0.5 or more runs a game on the season since last year and they are 37-20 UNDER after three or more consecutive road games. Milwaukee is counting on Wolf to come up with big effort to avoid the sweep and he is 13-1 at home vs. a NL team with a team batting average of .255 or worse over the last three seasons. (Team's Record)

This is the ESPN Sunday Night contest and it will start at 8:05 Eastern, with the Brewers 11-1 OVER after four straight games where they stranded seven or less runners on base.
