The Pittsburgh Steelers traded troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft, sources confirmed Sunday night.

ESPN 1050 in New York first reported the story Sunday night.

Holmes

Holmes had recently been accused of throwing a glass at a woman in a lounge. No charges have been filed against him, and Holmes' lawyer, Adam Swickle, told The Associated Press a male witness has taken responsibility for tossing the glass.

Holmes was entering his fifth season with the Steelers and has 235 catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Holmes was cited for marijuana possession, a misdemeanor, in Pennsylvania in 2008. The Steelers made Holmes inactive for the game following the incident and he subsequently apologized.

He was arrested on a domestic violence charge in 2006 in Ohio, but that charge was later dropped.

As a player, though, Holmes has the talent to be a No. 1 receiver. He was Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl XLIII.

It's one thing I still don't fully understand about the NFL.. I mean I haven't looked at the financials, which must be a driving force, but Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes just got dealt for a 5th round pick? C'mon..

All I can think about is financial limitations, but otherwise, why ever draft.. A lot of 5th round draft picks don't even play a down for the team that drafted them.. Why wouldn't everyone make deals like that? I don't get it.. Gotta be the cap.. That being said.. If I were a team that doesn't spend any money and sucks, like the Lions or Browns, I'd trade all my high draft picks for value.. Randy moss for I think a 2nd rounder, Boldin for like a 3rd rounder, Cutler was a 1st rounder, Holmes for a 5th.. Vince Wilfork was like a 3rd.. Like WTF.. Just trade all picks 1 through 7 and build an all-star team.. Teams that don't spend and can take on the contracts should do that.. Can anyone explain the reasoning behing shit like this? Other than financials?

Well outside of the allegations brought against him, and the pending suspension, Holmes has also told multiple people to kill themselves on his verified Twitter account. He has also said on there that he loves nothing more than waking up and lighting a J.

The Rooney family doesn't mess around with shitheads.

Football is kinda different then other sports when it comes to big name players. Careers in the NFL are much shorter and "star" players can become scrubs very very fast. With the exception of QB's players lose their value very fast for lots of reasons.

Every offseason it seems big name guys are on the move. If you take a look back it seems the majority of the time these guys dont do well for their new teams. The teams that try to improve via free agency don't seem to do nearly as well as just retooling thru the draft.

Take the Cowboys for example. Few years ago they had a decent team and then signed some big name free agents (TO, Pacman, etc) Everybody all of sudden waas picking them to go to the superbowl. Turned out they got worse and sucked. So they ditched the overrated big names (Roy Williams, TO, etc) and replaced them with younger nobodies and they were much better.

This trade show how much of a knuckle head Holmes is. The Steelers basically took nothing to get rid of him.

I just don't see Santonio being nearly as productive in this type of offense. As it was he was slightly overrated in Pitt, despite having a tremendous Super Bowl. He did some big things as a second receiver in an offense that transformed into a wide open pass happy attack the last couple years, but the Jets wont have that. Their best move so far was getting Cromartie from the Chargers to start opposite Revis. I dont think adding Santonio and LT's corpse is going to make this offense all that.

Holmes was expendable too. Dude's obviously a basket case.. anyone who watched them last year knows Mike Wallace is going to step in and do exactly what Santonio did, and most likely do it better.
