■Suits accuse 2 groups of posting copyrighted R-J stories online (3-17-10)
A company associated with the Las Vegas *************** has sued two more businesses and an organization, claiming they have infringed on copyrights by posting *************** stories on their Web sites without authorization.

In a suit filed this month in federal court in Las Vegas against MajorWager.com Inc. of Ontario, Canada, Righthaven LLC of Las Vegas charged MajorWager has been posting *************** stories involving sports and sports betting on its Web site without authorization.

A look at the MajorWager Web site on Friday showed it posts link to stories involving sports and gambling from numerous sources including the Las Vegas Sun and the ***************.

A request for comment was placed Friday with MajorWager.

Interesting, also says they are in the process of suing NORML( National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). I wonder if their stories were copied and pasted into the forum in the same manner Wrigley just did with his post, or if they were placed on the main page as a featured article.

I forgot Major Wager even existed till I saw this post.

good call, I always wondered how forums got past the whole copyright infringement thing, copy/pasting stories is pretty much standard practice on every forum I've ever visited.

in what sense?

On some papers, I'll try to copy a line or two and the entire page loads, including the ads. I believe the New York Post was one of the sources. This has happened to me on a couple occasions. I just give up and post the link.

Across the street they're discussing this at length but the guy across the street wasn't the best at properly attributing articles...

i'm just reading about this. haven't checked it out at other sites yet.

But am curious as to how it will hold up in court.

one would think that copying and pasting articles and/or parts of articles in forum threads would not amount to much, unless these are being posted on some main page with NO credit being given as the source and/or where they originate i don't forsee much happening.

but what do i know i've stayed at Holiday Inn's but i still don't know copyright infringement laws.

Did this place get shut down? I tried about 5 days apart to log on and got an error message both times.

good call, I always wondered how forums got past the whole copyright infringement thing, copy/pasting stories is pretty much standard practice on every forum I've ever visited.

Realize this is a two year old thread, but it's worth it to note that in my work with the Media Awareness Project from 1999-2008 we routinely dealt with the posting of newspaper articles - in our case, those pertaining to public drug policies.

If you follow the link above and open any of the "Latest News" items, you'll see how we created a template format for posting stories so that it was clearly not a true duplicate of the newspaper's web imagery or content. It was (and is) the opinion of our legal counsel that this was permissible under the "Fair Use" act pertaining to U.S. and Canadian copyright laws.

Nonetheless, there were probably about 10-20% of newspapers who started complaining in about the time of 2002, 2003 and forward. For those who made truly sincere and stern complaints, we modified our template format to only show an "Excerpt" (the lead of the article) and then included a built-in hyperlink that redirected to the newspaper's own website. That modification sufficed to satisfy all legal complaints and remains the standard employed by MAPinc today in the year 2012.

Oh, it's worth noting that when MAPinc got it's start in 1995, very very few newspapers had an online presence. That of course began to change within just the next few years, but it was only by maybe the year 2006, 2007 that we saw all of the top 500 circulation newspapers in North America create their own distinct online presence.
