I knew it would be about Detroit before I even got inside here.

Why is Detroit so screwed up?

They steal everything in sight. It has been run by liberals for over 40 yrs. A mayor back in the day told whitey to get out. They did and took all the money and tax base with them. They blame whitey for everything. The city unions are killing the city.

Is Dateline on right now? I'm seeing something else. That show where the person has to complete a task in under a minute.

it was on at 7. Here are the talking points of the show.

The kids don't go to school.
the kids that go to school are still stupid when they get out.
The schools are unsafe.
There are burnt out houses on every block. Many times they are the only houses on the block.
The politicians are all scumbags from the Mayor to City council to the congress reps. They have been in forever and they keep voting them in.
They blame whitey for everything.
It is a purely liberal city. They take more than they produce. There are very few tax paying citizens left.
The houses that remain are worthless.

i grew up in Detroit and i will always love Detroit. At least will still have sports

i don't care what people in New York say, Detroit is the best sports city in the world. We have the best teams and the best fans.

If you can make it in Detroit you can make it anywhere..

Why has it went downhill? Like others said it's the politicians, it also has to do with the fact that the D depends on manufacturing jobs and the auto industry and that went to shit after 8 years of george w bush's policies..

If it wasn't for Obama bailing out the auto industry, Detroit would be even worse than it is now. At least the auto industry is back on the rise, GM will have payed off all the bailout money this year, ford is doing great again, and the fact that toyota makes shitty cars that kill people, the american auto companies are gettin some of them toyoto customers..

It's like the saying goes.. "Out of a job yet? Keep buying foreign cars"

LMAO yeah 8 years of Bush is what did it. LOL too funny. Yeah it had nothing to do with the Mayors stealing all the money. It had nothing to do with Coleman Young telling whitey to get out.
I see you as a former Detroiter still blaming whitey.

40 yrs of liberals have run that city yet you can link it to Bush.

Clinton signed nafta and all the congress people from this state also voted for it. Yet its GWB's fault LOL

I'm imagining Detroit in 20 years to look like the desolate outskirts in "beyond thunderdome" - I said imagining, not expecting

I agree 100%. Conservatives will never get it that Bush and his administration are just as much to blame for the things they didn't do than the things they did. And helping the average hard working man has never been on the republican agenda. Having worked for General Motors for many years, I know exactly why this company failed. And it doesn't have anything to do with unions. It has more to do with inaction of the CEO's on down to the engineers to stay ahead of the game when new competetion came into the country. They thought they could keep their same customer base by building the same old plain looking inferior cars for the last 30 years. And it caught up with them. By the way I also hold Clinton responsible for the mess too. If he hadn't gone along with the republicans and signed the NAFTA bill, it wouldn't have caused a lot of the GM parts and assembly plants to be moved to Mexico. Union or no union, there's no way the average american auto worker would have been able to compete with mexican workers who are are willing to work for two bits an hour because they have a much smaller cost of living there.

Excellent post Sooners. While the Unions can be held partly responsible they weren't the only problem. Management were the ones who decided to make unreliable vehicles instead of making vehicles last and I think you are right that they were counting on their existing customer base.

Clinton also had something to do with it with NAFTA.

I have one disagreement with you though. While I agree Bush had something to do with this as well he was NOT a conservative and true conservatives hate him. He was one of those that helped people get down payments for homes and also to help people pay for their mortgages. He is as much to blame for this mortgage fiasco as anyone else. If people can't afford a down payment or need help making payments they shouldn't own a home.

That's why it is so nice living here in Thailand...because of the cheap labor, stuff is not so expensive here and everything is cheap compared to other countries..there are no unions and unemployment is low....and foriegners are not allowed to work here, the law says if a Thai can do the job, he gets first shot....(<)<
