Well, I've been around just as many blocks as Wil over time, however he has taken many different avenues and streets.

I have a uncle that needed lot of dental work.he was looking a around $3000-$5000 worth.
He went to CR and had everything done for $750.He also told me that the dentist was great.

Unfortunately I've had a lot of exposure to the CR health care system in the last 3 years. No complaints whatsoever.

Anyplace is a step up from the US healthcare system.

I recently got treated in the ER for a pinched nerve in shoulder. The bill was like 2 grand

That was for a shot of something (I forget what) an Xray and a prescription for pain killers and Naproxen

WHAT A JOKE

there was a show on CNN of some hospitals charging like $300 for an Aspirin and other obscene charges, might have been 60 minutes, but it was recently.

was absolutely shocking

The older you get, the more your made aware of the real healthcare costs out there. It's a shock to the system. Especially when you don't know for sure if your covered by this or that procedure because the system is so complicated..

Costa Rica has TWO healthcare systems: public healthcare (Caja) and private heathcare. Don't try the former.

Private healtcare in Costa Rica is much cheaper than in the U.S.A. because:

a) Private hospitals and doctors are under no obligation to provide care for anyone who cannot pay. (Can't pay, go to the public hospital)

b) Even insured people generally pay out-of-pocket and get reimbursed. Even with the expectation of getting reimbursed, you pay attention to prices and procedures, and the hospital doesn't inflate the bill with impunity.

c) FDA and drug patent cartel have lesser power, generics are more often available, and geographic price discrimination is more favorable.

d) As far as I know, medical school is shorter term and easier to get in to. In the USA medical school admission is massively restricted to keep the supply of doctors very low and salaries very high.

The USA could learn something, but they are going in the wrong direction.

Day off today sorry..To be honest for anything serious I go to the US where all my medical needs are free as a result of being a VietNam Veteran.

My wife and two grown up step children have excellent totally covered medical care here in Costa Rica.

Would you let an auto mechanic or electrician do work without first quoting a price?
