Well, I have been watching Major League Baseball all my life and heard of a rule that I have never heard before.

I was watching a Twins game a couple of nights ago and Bert Blyleven said that if a batted ball hits the pitcher's rubber and goes foul it is a foul ball. I have never heard of this rule ever.

Anybody ever hear of this rule? I am sure Wil has.

I was a scholastic catcher, I saw that in a game I played in, we were at bat, our hitter hit a two hopper trough the box, hit the rubber, went foul by the third base coach, ump called it a fair ball, batter wound up at second, the other manager went ballistic, brought out his copy of the rule book, ump overruled his call.

I think that was the wrong call. Bert said the ball has to hit the rubber on the fly and can not hit the ground before hitting the rubber.

I didn't know the rule either, and I was a catcher.

How about if the ball hits a base in fair ground on the fly and bounces foul? Is that the same thing, a foul ball?

I believe a base is played like the foul pole. Hit it and its fair.

No Fair Ball.

If a batted ball hits the base, it is a fairball, regardless of where it winds up.

Did not know the rule about the pitching rubber.

The original call was correct. The rule is that the ball has to hit the rubber on a fly and then bounce into foul territory.

if a batted ball is not touched by a player prior to passing 1st or 3rd base and bounds from fair to foul territory It is in fact a "FOUL BALL"

So if a batted ball hits the pitching rubber than goes foul... Foul Ball!

This is Simple baseball... cmon thinkabout it

This is why I love baseball. It's like taking the drivers test. You know how to drive but do you really know ALL the rules in the the test manual? I love baseball for all the strategy involved but every now and then you get some quirky call which always raises a stir. Gotta admit, I think this ranks right at the top for me. That's why I wish I could see a replay of this. Gotta be somewhere.
