Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Chicago Cubs (-165, Off)

Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Silva is seeing a shrink. So is his ERA.

Silva is a castaway from Seattle, where he struggled with consistency. The Cubs introduced him to "consultant" Marc Strickland, a sports psychologist who is bringing out the best in his new client.

"They teach me a lot of stuff," Silva told the Chicago Tribune. "It's not easy. Sometimes we have no patience to wait for good results. When you're working so hard, and trying to do the right thing, if you don't have the good results (immediately) sometimes you go crazy. That's what happened to me."

Whatever head games Strickland is playing Silva, it's working. Silva is off to a 2-0 start with a microscopic 0.63 ERA, allowing just 10 hits in 19 innings pitched.

Counterpart John Lannan has allowed 24 hits over 18.0 innings and the Nationals are struggling for offense, scoring just 10 runs over their last four games.

It doesn't help having eight players on the DL, not including third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who still isn't ready to return. Look for Silva to baffle the Nats, with a little help from his psychic friend.

Pick: Cubs

Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers (-210, 8.5)

The Brewers took the broom to the Bucs last week in Pittsburgh and, after being swept by the Cubs at home over the weekend, welcome another encounter with the Pirates.

These same pitchers met on Wednesday, with Milwaukee's Yavoni Gallardo striking out 10 in an 8-0 shutout and Pittsburgh's Zach Duke allowing three home runs in just 3 2/3 innings of work.

Although it's accurate to say all teams match up well with the low-budget Bucs, the Brew Crew seems to have their number. They have won six straight over the Pirates, outscoring them by a 36-1 margin in last week's three-game series.

It wasn't a fluke, and it doesn't get much easier than picking a one-sided rematch from five days ago.

Pick: Brewers

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 27 in Baseball History...

1918 - The Giants' 9-0 winning start and the Dodgers' 0-9 losing streak are both stopped as Brooklyn's Larry Cheney wins 5-3.

1926 - In the Giants' 9-8 win over the Phillies, 17-year-old Mel Ott makes his first appearance pinch-hitting for Jimmy Ring. He strikes out. Ott won't play regularly until 1927.

1944 - Jim Tobin of the Braves pitched a no-hitter against the Dodgers at Boston, winning 2-0. He also hit a homer.

1947 - Today is Babe Ruth Day at all major league parks. A crowd of 58,339 at Yankee Stadium honors the ailing slugger, but the Yankees lose to Sid Hudson and the Washington Senators 1-0.

1968 - Tom Phoebus, the Orioles' top pitcher the previous year, throws a 6-0 no hitter against the Red Sox. Brooks Robinson drives in three runs and makes a great stab to rob Rico Petrocelli of a hit in the eighth.

1971 - Curt Flood jumps the Senators after 13 games and departs for Denmark, ending his playing career. Flood batted .293 and won seven Gold Glove Awards during his 15-year tenure in the major leagues. He will continue his antitrust suit, which will eventually reach the Supreme Court.

1971 - Hank Aaron becomes the third member of the 600-home run club, but one of the other two members, the Giants' Willie Mays, hits a tenth-inning single to beat Aaron's Braves.

1973 - In 50-degree Detroit weather, Royals rookie Steve Busby no-hits the Tigers 3-0. It is the first Royals no-hitter and the first at Tiger Stadium since Virgil Trucks did it in 1952. Busby is the first no-hit game pitcher not to bat.

1983 - In a 4-2 win over the Expos, Nolan Ryan strikes out Brad Mills to move ahead of Walter Johnson and become baseball's all-time leader at 3,509.

1990 - Dodgers ace Orel Hershiser will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his pitching shoulder. He hadn't missed a start since joining the club's rotation in 1984.

1994 - Twins right-hander Scott Erickson no-hits the Brewers 6-0 for Minnesota's first no-hitter since 1967.

1996 - Barry Bonds homers twice to reach the 300-home run mark. Coupled with the 300 steals by the Giants outfielder, Bonds joins his father Bobby, godfather Willie Mays, and Andre Dawson with 300 homers and 300 steals.
