The Phillies have finally showed Ryan Howard the money.

Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, signed a five-year extension Monday that guarantees him $125 million. The Phillies hold a club option for a sixth year that could elevate the total value of the deal to $138 million.

Under terms of the deal, Howard will make $20 million in he 2012 and 2013 seasons and $25 million per year from 2014-16. The club option is worth $23 million with a $10 million buyout. The extension includes awards bonuses and a limited no-trade provision.

Howard, a two-time All-Star, was the NL rookie of the year in 2005. In his MVP season the following year, he set a Phillies single-season record with 58 home runs.

Well deserved, he may tank now.
No, Howard won't tank, he's one of those that likes to play for the hell of it.
Now there are some that may say 25 mil a year is too much for anybody, but it's a good deal for Philly never the less, they lock up one of MLB's premier tater smasher until the end of his prime (he'll be 35 when the contract is up) he averages .280-50-140, even stole 8 bases last year, and played in every game the last 2 seasons.

Good guy in the clubhouse, good guy for public relations, good guy for baseball.

Well deserved.

If Pujols doesn't get busted for HGH, he'll get 30 mil a year.

Wow, pretty shocking. Big contract. He puts up the numbers though and carries the team every September it seems when the other guys start getting run down. Guess he's worth it. Shocked it got done this fast behind the scenes. There was no indication they were even working on a deal. Usually these things get drawn out in the media for a while.

The RBIs have as much to do with his teammates as his own hitting. Currently an obp under .300, three walks and 14 strikeouts. Even if he continues as he has in recent years, .950 ops, limited defensive value, that is not even close to being worth $25 million per year. Most baseball players exit their prime at age 30, the large sluggers tend to fall harder than most

ST. LOUIS -- Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox has an idea of how much St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols should get in his next contract: $50 million a year.
Cox saw that Philadelphia Phillies star Ryan Howard got a five-year extension worth $125 million.
So on Tuesday, before the Braves played at St. Louis, Cox offered his assessment. Cox says Pujols is twice as good as any player in the majors.
Pujols is in the final year of a seven-year, $100 million contract with St. Louis. The Cardinals have a $16 million option on the three-time NL MVP for next season.

I don't agree with this deal as a Phillies fan. Sure Howard is one of my favorite players, a tremendous contributor to this club, but he's not even the first or second best player on this team (Utley & Doc, obv.). billhill, he will be 37 at the end of the contract. He still had TWO years left until FA and that should have been the time to do a contract anywhere from 2-4 years.

No way, in 2013, will there be a team wanting to pay over $20 million annually for a 33 year old slugger.

They still had time to gauge his talent and how he will age.

Seems like he didn't make the majors until he was nearing 25 ?

I'd have waited on this deal, if it were my team, since a couple years to decide were available.

I can't blame the players for accepting these deals, though.

You can't blame the players, who in their right mind would turn down that kind of money? These owners though give out these huge contracts and then bitch about them afterwards.

Never understood why the hate is always towards the players, when the owners are clearly the ones who are at fault.

Good player. Most overrated and overpaid player in my lifetime, though.

Yeah this contract is a bit much. Maybe 4 years at $80 million would be a little more reasonable.

he is definitely not worth 25 million. it should have been around 90 million for the 5 years.

if you put adrian gonzalez in the same spot as howard, he would have better average, more home runs and rbis and runs.
