It's rare that we get a coach to give a fantasy-type prediction, but there you have it. Turner noted that he won't have to lean on Mathews as much as he did LaDainian Tomlinson when LT was a rookie (Turner was Chargers offensive coordinator under Mike Riley that year), but we can be certain that Mathews is going to get all the early-down work. The Chargers will also run the ball on early downs more now that they have someone capable. If Mathews gets nearly 300 touches as Turner predicts, he won't have trouble finishing as a top-15 fantasy back in San Diego's high-scoring offense.

Mathews was the Bolts' top pick and one of no more than three tailbacks at the camp, so naturally he'd get a lot of attention. Still, it's clear that he won't be eased in. Based on Norv Turner's 290-touch prediction, Mathews will top 1,300 all-purpose yards if he averages a pedestrian 4.0 yards per carry and 7.5 yards per catch. As a team, San Diego scored 17 rushing TDs in 2009.

We tentatively expect Mathews to get the first crack at the gig come Week 1.

As we suspected. The high ankle sprain won't improve without rest, so Mike Tolbert is expected to start at Seattle with Darren Sproles seeing an uptick in touches as well. Tolbert is a low-end RB2 in standard scoring leagues this week while Sproles graduates to legit a flex option in PPR leagues.

High ankle sprains are notorious for sidelining players for extended periods of time, so this is great news for owners. He remains doubtful for Sunday's matchup against the Seahawks and is a must bench, but should not miss more than a game or two.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune describes Mathews' chances of starting the game as "very good." The Cardinals are having all kinds of problems in run defense, ranking 31st out of 32 teams and ahead of only the Lions. Mathews might lose some goal-line work to Mike Tolbert, but it'll be a great sign if the rookie makes it through a week of practice unscathed.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>The Bolts are in the process of "easing" Mathews back from his high ankle sprain, but he's a safe bet for double-digit touches in Week 5. The matchup couldn't be better against an Oakland team not only being obliterated by the run, but likely to be without WLB Quentin Groves (hamstring) and definitely minus DT John Henderson. Mathews isn't a RB1, but he's a must-start RB2.

Ryan Mathews - RB - Chargers Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune believes Ryan Mathews will "probably not" start at Oakland on Sunday.
"But I expect he'll get 10-15 carries and a couple catches if all goes to plan," Acee predicts. Acee also revealed that Mathews' ankle injury sidelined him for part of Friday's practice. The elbow, while wrapped, is not a concern. Mike Tolbert, leading the league in yards after contact, will likely start for a third straight game. Both Bolts backs should be considered solid RB2 options against a Raiders defense allowing the second-most fantasy points to opposing runners. October 10 - 5:40 a.m. ET

Coach Norv Turner stated Monday that he wanted to see a full practice week from Mathews before reinstalling him as the Chargers' feature back, so this is concerning. Mathews probably came up a bit lame after Week 5, possibly dealing with some soreness in the ankle. While he seems likely to play Sunday against the Rams, the Chargers may continue to "ease in" the rookie as they have over the past two weeks. Check back for a Thursday update.

Mathews is in no danger of missing this week's game against the Rams, but coach Norv Turner has suggested that he won't carry the load until he puts in a full week of practice. Expect Mike Tolbert to remain in the mix for at least one more week. Rotoworld ranks Mathews 20th among fantasy backs this week.

"We want to push it and get him as many carries as we can," coach Norv Turner said. "He worked last Thursday and obviously was real sore on Friday and wasn’t able to do as much as we would like. I think from watching him today, and hopefully everything goes smooth tonight and he feels good in the morning, that we will be able to up his load a little bit." Check back Friday to be sure, but it sounds like Mathews is safe to use as a rock-solid RB2 against the Rams.

Ryan Mathews - RB - Chargers Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, as expected.
While it would be nice to see Mathews practicing on Wednesdays, this has become routine for the rookie. He's fully expected to start against the Pats and carry most of the workload. October 21 - 5:18 p.m. ET

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>It's Mathews' first practice on a Wednesday in nearly a month. The rookie hasn't topped 12 rushing attempts since Week 1, due in large part to coach Norv Turner's tendency to give up on the run early in games. He's averaging 4.7 yards per carry, so Turner would be smart to avoid that strategy going forward. Mathews remains a risky RB2 against Tennessee in Week 8.

The San Diego Union-Tribune calls Mathews "the most questionable" among the Chargers' injured players, which includes Legedu Naanee, Antonio Gates, and Malcom Floyd. Turner says the Chargers' "hope" is that all of the above will be available against Denver, but Mathews isn't going to be much of a fantasy option considering his injury and unreliable recent production.
