My wife works for a big bank. We carry it through her employer for about $215 per month.

We are 34, 35. Seems everytime we go to the doctor we still get a bill in the mail stating something that wasn't covered.

Yes.

Cost is Free for everyone in Canada.

(fwiw, i have been in two major accidents in my life, and in both cases the health care system took care of me in what probably amounted to hundreds of thousands in bills.)

That being said its not all peachy and rosy... if you have a non threatning illness, wait times can be long and the system can be filled with red tape.

You must have a ppo. HMO usually covers the full cost but sometimes getting in to see a specialist for something can be a hassle. PPO is the way to go IMO. You can pick any doc you want and only pay a small portion up front. Have a PPO myself through my employer and pay 140 a month and usually nothing-20% of med costs. Also get to see the best docs in LA/OC at any time I want

I pay close to $100 a week for just me. I don't want to turn this into a political thread but being that I know nothing about this stuff can anyone explain if our health system is gonna be the same as canadas eventually and if so when? Also, under obamas plan, if I wanted to start my own business would I be fully covered medically and would my employees be covered through the government? When is this all suppose to take place?

I was on a PPO for about 10 years, and I'll switch to a HSA starting Saturday. It will cover all expenses over $5,000 a year, and since I rarely go to the doctor, it seemed to be the best choice.

I'm in Canada, in BC, and i pay about $50 a month. Maybe they do
things differently in your part of Canada, in the East, eh?

Additionally i am charged for a number of other things. For example
an ambulance visits my residence and i get a bill for it in the mail.

But very poor folks, like those on welfare or social assistance, do
not have to pay the monthly fees.

Though i suppose what i pay is negligible compared to the USA.

I pay around $250 a month for my family of 6. I also get re-imbursed for any co-pays and prescription costs up to $1500 for each person.

So far there is no "Govt Insurance"......Everyone is just required to buy a policy from a regular insurance company. As far as your buisness its not clear if you will be required to have a plan that covers everyone who works there or if you'll just have to pay for whatever plan they may have. But 1 thing is clear....Buisness will pay.

o...1 other very minor point...None of this "coverage" starts until 2014...in the mean time they are just going to make everyone pay for it, nobody actually gets anything the 1st 3 years.

I have it, company pays half....here's what I understand, at some point, everyone will have to have it. If you don't, you will be fined, approx $800. But you cannot be turned away. So why would you pay thousands of $ per yr, instead of paying the fine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So do you keep an insurance company on speed dial in case of an emergency medical situation?! LOL. That's the only problem I see with that strategy, unless they can sign you up in 30 seconds over the phone or will pay for costs already incurred.

You can presently buy emergency medical only coverage. I'm not sure you will be able to do so under Obamacare -- if you can it will be non-qualifying and you still pay the fine, but then that would be the ideal strategy, pay the fine and buy emergency-only coverage.

It's an awesome deal for me! If I get bad medically, I can just move back to the States and get coverage. And if I decide to repatriate when I retire or before I die, I don't have to worry about whether I can get coverage.

Anything to good to be true, is, of course. This deal is designed to bankrupt any insurance company stupid enough to offer qualifying coverage, so they can come back with single-payer. It's designed to fail.

BTW, I pay $3000/year for family of 5 in Costa Rica. That covers $200,000 per person per year. However, I pay all expenses out of pocket (especially doctors visits, medicines, etc); I only waste my time seeking insurance reimbursement for something major. All dental out-of-pocket too, doesn't cover that.

I hope to keep my insurance/job. My point is that people who don't have employer paid insurance will be required to have insurance by 2013/14
