But you cannot be turned away. So why would you pay thousands of $ per yr, instead of paying the fine. Correct me if I'm wrong.
So do you keep an insurance company on
speed dial in case of an emergency medical situation?! LOL. That's the only problem I see with that strategy, unless they can sign you up in 30 seconds over the phone or will pay for costs already incurred.
You can presently buy emergency medical only coverage. I'm not sure you will be able to do so under Obamacare -- if you can it will be non-qualifying and you still pay the fine, but then that would be the ideal strategy, pay the fine and buy emergency-only coverage.
It's an awesome deal for me! If I get bad medically, I can just move back to the States and get coverage. And if I decide to repatriate when I retire or before I die, I don't have to worry about whether I can get coverage.
Anything to good to be true, is, of course. This deal is designed to bankrupt any insurance company stupid enough to offer qualifying coverage, so they can come back with single-payer.
It's designed to fail.
BTW, I pay $3000/year for family of 5 in Costa Rica. That covers $200,000 per person per year. However, I pay all expenses out of pocket (especially doctors visits, medicines, etc); I only waste my time seeking insurance reimbursement for something major. All dental out-of-pocket too, doesn't cover that.
